hi all

just spent the day at lano and had a visit from old mate the ranger and he asked for our off road rego, and said from nov 1st 2010 all unlicensed bikes will be fined $50 bucks if on the dunes with no plate or sticker with rego numbers, and all riders who rock up from perth will be turned away from the gate to dunes in future.

i pulled out a rego for my old bike which was current, but we could tell the paper trail for fines would of been out of control if he started to issue them

all i know is to register your bike is $12 bucks at a licensing centre and no vehicle inspection just vehicle details required and a $6 renewal per year.

over east is pretty steep in rego fees just for stockton beach, what is behind this, the town probably relys on weekend income from the people who attend the lano dunes,with out them its just another weekday (nobody just local fisherman)

We have got it so good in Perth, Gnangara pines, Barbagallo pines, Woodbridge Quad Track, and Lancelin dunes to name just a few riding spots (I have no Idea what's legal south of the river) And they are all just a stones throw from the CBD and all we need is $12 (and six dollars PA) offroad rego, or $100 club membership (woodbridge) and we can ride like its going out of fashion.


Not many other states can boast this. Get rego boys, the more of us out there with rego the more weight we have as a group when it comes to crunch time.

12 bucks, the choc milk and pie at the servo costs more than that.

If the wether is good, I'm going to lanos on Sunday... this post just made up my mind.

spoke to GinGin shire today, ORV rego has always been a requirement to ride up there, he just thought he would police it that day i think. I have been up their fw times over the last few months and he only pinging no helmets,but for the sake of 12 bucks I am off to licensing centre tomorrow and hittin the dunes on saturday,

Pies, milk cartons, and legal off road areas are big in the west. You'll get used to it.....

Gotto dunes this morning b4 my mate got bikes off ute , ranger pulled up asked if they orv'd,which they weren't 50 buck fine for riding even tho still on the ute,asked him why not pinging others for same thing, said he is fining everyone. Didn't bother asking me if mine rego'd or mate next to the ute we all pulled in together and mine was already off trailer, and I had not put rego plate on yet, stupid thing was he said I fine you 50 bucks and you can ride all day. Stupid tool on a power trip I thinx

Not wrong witth midweek thing even a friday i have been there and had the whole dunes to ourselves. I have my rego though so not too worried but think the ranger was just playing the power trip thing, I think my mate is putting in a complaint with the shire aboutr him coz he just straight up treated him like "profanity removed" didnt see him pull anyone else over for no rego and it was a fairly busy day with prolly 100 -150 bikes/quads out there.anyways for the sake of 12 first up and then 6 dollars a year it worth gettin it

i live in a town of about 2000-3000 people and a couple of weekends ago we had a big blitz on offroad rego with bikes and quads, the ranger and cops were impounding bikes without rego and issueing fines for riding on offroad tracks (4wd tracks or as he called them "dirt highways" etc).

the problem is we have no designated riding areas so we can be 25km's away on a beach with no one else on it and still have our bike impounded.

which leads me to my main point that i will never put a plate on my bike because losing point off my drivers licence for riding a unregoed bike on "dirt highways" because im on shire land.
and by regoing my bike i will still get done because its not a designated riding area. and by putting a plate on the no longer have to catch me but rock up to my house and take my bike.

on a side note i was also told that i could rego my quad as a tractor and ride on the road!! although this required indicators and brake/tail/headlights.

koojeda rd (sorry if i spelt it wrong) just before Bakers hill has a bit of riding area & it too has had a crack down my mates one of the last houses at the end of the road which backs on to it & they came on to his property giving us the third degree

we just said the neighbours hate us riding on my mates property & said they can stop us so we get out the back to keep them happy but the neighbours cant do anything the ranger said

so you cant beat it angry rangers or angry neighbours which one ??

Who told you this Doorslammer?

My understanding is that you can register it as a tractor but only to drive between your paddocks separated by a road.

the ranger. but through further investigation i believe it is only if you have a ligitmate reason to cross a public road.

i think there was a bit of confusion from the ranger (a good friend of my old man) mainly because the cops have 2 honda recons (or whatever they are) and can ride on the streets and around all the roads. i doubt i would be allowed to do that

I was up there most of Saturday and heard nothing bout broken ankle.

If you are govt department or contract to govt department you can get conditional rego, which is why landscapers with spray tanks and surf clubs have rego'd quads and shires like freo have sxs rego,d sux but that's life

Pfft! Riding areas in Perth suck big time. Yeah sure we have riding areas close to the CBD at $12 rego/$6 per year but they are a lot smaller than many years ago. And with the increasing sales of off road vehicles it just makes it down right dangerous to ride in these areas at peak times.

Cramming these amounts of machines, registered or not, into riding areas like Lancelin, Gnangara or Thomas Rd on a busy, especially a long weekend is asking for trouble. I haven't ridden in about 8 months because the only place anywhere decent that is legal is a good 2 hours drive away and that's Lancelin. It's no wonder there is a lot of illegal riding going on in many areas.

None of these ORV areas support proper trail riding as such and are more a closed off restricted area that would be useless for anything else anyway. I have no problem paying for rego and my vehicle is. I would just like to see some enjoyable riding trails that aren't simply discarded land that gets left for off road vehicle users.

Granted its not perfect, but is far and away better than what other states have done.

Go to any of these areas during the week, and the crowding you talk of is non existent. I went to gnangara last weekend and the place was like a gost town, was that not a peak time?

Go to any other state and try and find a riding area near the CBD. you don't seem to get how good we have it in comparison.

This is the only state I know of that off roaders actually have parliamentary representation.

Every dollar we throw at rec. rego is a dollar towards improving what we have so far. So don't be too quick to write it all off as a bad joke, its bad enough when non riders do that.

Not perfect I agree, but its certainly not a joke either.

Hi Ozquad,

Yes I agree we do have it better than most other states but it seems every time I read something about ORV areas in WA it's about an area being closed down or reduced in size. I thoroughly enjoy "trail" style of riding but none of the current ATV areas offer that. I know such organisations as RTRA are currently working with local and state governments to improve approved trail riding areas. Progress Is being made but it has been rather long winded. Hopefully soon we will see a trail riding area out off Metro Rd however it looks like it will only be availabe to road registered trail bikes which is totally useless for us ATV riders.
