PostPosted: Sun Jan 16, 2011 1:51 am Post subject: 85 and 87 KXT restore Reply with quote Back to top

OK boys, For those that don't know I own two Kawasaki Race Three Wheelers. A 1987 KXT250 and have just bought a 1985 KXT250. Now that I've got the 85 KXT heading West, I have made the commitment to myself to get my A into G and put some green meanies back into the world. We all know the world needs more green!!

My 87 Tecate is in bits ATM. I pulled it apart to be powder coated 12 months ago and its still in bits. Although some work has been done. The 85 looks real rough so I have no great expectations for that one either.

My resolution for 2011 is to get them both up and running. The 87 I'm going to restore to stock the best I can. Its got a keyed ignition, what else do you do with a 250cc two stroke MX machine that has a key...

The 85 is going to be made into a retro racer, It's missing its lights and the radiator guard is damaged. Closed course racers don't have lights so this is also a natural progression as well.

Aussieduner, if your still out there, can I buy one of your Tecate number-plate surrounds? If someone still speaks to the big T can you hit him up please.

I've got progress piccies of the 87 rebuild to get things rolling, can someone please post up a numpties guide or link to putting pictures onto this forum.

Gents, I will need some motivation to push this through, I'm depending on you guys to kick me in arse if stuff aint moving from my end. I'm a mad procrastinator, my job keeps me very busy, and I've got two young kids.
Doing this is not going to be easy.

I'm thinking that the trike forum needs some balance.... Far too much red stuff has transpired on these pages in the past and I'm here to bring balance to the force. The aim is one up and running by 4 March, the second by 4 July.

Ready Set.......

P.S. the 85 is due to land this week

P.P.S. I'll decide which one to get done first, pending the condition of the 85. Given its a new purchase, I'm really excited about that one ATM.

P.P.P.S. If anyone in australia can help out with Tecate parts, throw me a PM. and

P.P.P.S. If anyone from the WA thread is watching, Trike ride Lancelin Dunes 4th March 2011.

......... GO

Hi Jase
Great to see you have bought another toy, I had thought about buying that Q/land tecate so many times. Did you buy the second one (for parts)?
I look forward to the build pics.

G'day Mick
The second one for parts was gorrrne. He had the spare engine still, so I picked that up in the deal. It should arrive this week, I've got the con # and I'm resisting the urge to ring the transport company every second hour.

I had been watching this Tecate for ages, and I've even contacted him twice before about it, but he was asking a little too much given the work required to get it back into top condition. But since he dropped the price so low I couldn't say no. You would struggle to get a banged up air cooled R for that money, so I'm stoked.

There was a time I was going to try and get all three. A Tri-Z, a 250R, and a Tecate. But I'm very happy how its panned out. Green must be my thing.

TBR,
Yeah I reckon 4 March sounds as good a day as any. Even if the 85 isn't ready by then the 87 will be, it doesn't need that much work. I'll make a reassessment on 7 Feb. If we are both good for 4 March by then , We'll lock it in. Sound good?

Hopefully we will get a 250R on the day along with one of your Yellow perils and take some piccies of the three meanies in one spot. Not a very common sight.

As for progress so far.... err.... yes right I'm ORF to the shed for a bit.

The 85 has arrived and I'm as as happy as a fourteen year old with two tallywhackers.

Shes a bit rough, but all of its there. There is no way its going to be ready for the 4th. Looks like I'm getting the 87 ready to go riding and not the 85.

Its a shame really as I'm so excited about it. The fat tyred little green meanie is just going to have to wait its turn.

85 update.

Arrived on pallet 21/01/11.
F Brakes inoperable, steel braided lines fitted wrong, one section kinked.
R Brakes seized.
Brake fluid rancid
f/r wheel hubs loose
r bearings loose
leaks oil from the cases
plastics badly sun faded
rusty forks
damaged radiator guard, missing headlight
sticky throttle
bent bars.
cracked radiator mount
seat cover perished and foam worn off.
Unsure if running
Chain rusty
Flat tyres
Rear grab bar wrong on so many levels
new chain slider
gasket goo on all engine gaskets.
cLean oil in cases
clean water in radiator

(suspect previous owner re-did the top end, then went for a ride without brakes, where he would have hit the powerband then broke neck/back/face /waddeva, then sold trike to DDR, Where it sat on a shelf for 2+ years)

Update 01/02/11:
F brakes working
R brakes unlocked
rust removed from forks
plastic restoration in progress
R Hubs tight
radiator guard removed
Chain lubed.

OK gents, where is every one getting their replacement carburettors from.

I want to put new Carbies on both of these trikes, as I'm well an truly over messing around with stock carburetors that don't have an idle mixture screw. Only an air speed screw

How much, who from, and what was shipping like.

Plus I haven't the foggiest which carb to get. What are the best brands and what is the best type of carby?

The 85 has a VM32ss, and the 87 has a 34mm Mikuni.

I want both bikes to do the following:
Run properly
Be reliable, and
Run properly.

I have a DG exhaust system for the 87 and I have the stock exhaust for the 85.

I got my 34mm PJ Keihin with a thumb throttle from http://bdtmotorsports.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=48 for US$136.27. US$94.99 for the carb and throttle and US$41.28 for shipping.
I bought my 39mm PWK from http://myworld.ebay.com/deenadepot/ on ebay usa for US$145.50 and a set of VForce 3 reeds for US$111.71 and they cost US$43.45 for shipping.

Mikuni carbs are a pain to tune.

Sorry about the long time no post fellas.

Waiting for parts basically. This is what I've ordered (and paid for BTW)
For the 85:
two sets of plastics, one green one red.
new seat foam
gripper seat cover
kick start rebuild kit
full gasket set
fender brace
repo intake boot

For the 87:
one set of green plastic
kickstart rebuild kit
over flow bottle
KIPS label
full gasket set
repo intake boot
gripper seat cover

Been waiting for ever for the bits to be shipped, I suspect I could pass away from old age before they get here.

Presenlty working on an axle conversion kit which will see me running a yfz axle and round house carrier on the 87. I'm Just getting some shims made up to align all the bits then I'll throw some piccies up.

Thats about all at the moment. I'm not buying one more bit from overseas until my first shipment comes in. Will post up some more info as soon as my bits arrive... C'Mon Tammy.
