PostPosted: Fri Jun 08, 2012 6:27 pm Post subject: Stockton Beach Closed for Weekend Reply with quote Back to top

G'day folks,

I have just received an email from Mick Murphy from NPWS stating the closure of Stockton Beach this weekend due to the result of bad weather conditions causing damage to the beach.

I thought I'd let you guys know ASAP rather than getting there and being turned away.

Sorry about the bad news

Brad.

This is what I received from Mick.
Brad,
As discussed beach will be closed to all non commercial vehicles over the weekend.
Could you please post this link to our website on the OZATV and email to your contacts.

Also attached is the press release
Any issues please give me a call.
Regards
Mick Murphy

‘Wild weather causes temporary closure of Worimi Conservation Lands (Stockton Beach)’
The Worimi Conservation Lands including Stockton Beach north of Newcastle have been temporarily closed for all public access, due the recent extreme weather creating a public safety risk.

National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Hunter Region Manager Robert Quirk said that exceptionally high tides and large waves have caused severe erosion to Stockton Beach including deep flooding behind the fore dune.

“Wave action has eroded away the beach and fore dunes leaving steep ledges and large areas of very soft sand,” Mr Quirk said.

“There is insufficient beach remaining to allow for the safe traverse by 4WD vehicles, forcing the closure of the entire 32km long Stockton Beach.

“In addition, deep pools of water have accumulated behind the fore dune causing large areas of quick sand, making access to the area extremely dangerous.

“Park closure signs have been installed at all entrances, and NPWS staff will be based at the entrances over the weekend to advise visitors about the closure.

“NPWS will continue to monitor the conditions daily, and will re-open the park as soon as conditions improve. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that the beach will be safe enough to reopen before the end of the long weekend,” she said.

For further information visit www.nationalpark.nsw.gov.au or call NPWS Hunter Region on 02 4984 8200.

G'day Folks,

Sorry still bad news!!!!!!!!

This is the email from Mick today.

Brad, no good news sorry. Beach remains closed to public vehicles due to continuing safety issues.
Please find attached press release for distribution.
Thanks very much
Regards
Mick murphy

‘Stockton Beach remains temporarily closed for over the weekend (16-17 June) due to safety risk’
The Worimi Conservation Lands including Stockton Beach remains closed for all public access, due the recent extreme weather creating a public safety risk.

National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Hunter Region Manager Robert Quirk said that the exceptionally high tides and large waves which lashed the coast last week, have caused severe erosion to Stockton Beach including deep flooding behind the fore dune.

Mr. Quirk said “Despite the calmer weather experienced this week, the beach and dunes have not yet recovered, and there are still large areas where wave action has eroded away the beach and fore dunes leaving steep ledges and expanding areas of very soft sand.

“There is still insufficient beach remaining to allow for the safe traverse by 4WD vehicles, forcing the closure of the entire 32km long Stockton Beach.

“In addition, deep pools of water behind the fore dune remain a concern, causing large areas of quick sand, making access to the area extremely dangerous.

“Licenced four-wheel drive, sand boarding, horse riding and quad bike riding tour companies have been permitted restricted access to the park, allowing them to continue limited operations.

“Unfortunately, due to safety concerns the park remains closed over the weekend (16/17 June 2012) for all public access, however NPWS will continue to closely monitor conditions daily, and will re-open the park as soon as conditions improve”, Mr. Quirk said.

For further information visit www.nationalpark.nsw.gov.au or call NPWS Hunter Region on 02 4984 8200.

ENDS

Sorry no Cheers again

Brad

Extreme conditions but they still let tours go on Confused
Sounds stupid that they let amateur riders on beach to make some money but we can't Rolls eyes
It's funny that at the meeting that guy said weather was a small contributer to the erosion then the next week it destroys it laughing
Guess it didn't want those pesky atv riders getting all the credit

This has been my argument since i started riding atvs, they say we destroy the vegetation and erodde the dunes etc. But one storm comes through and destroys the joint. But we are "the main cause"thats why im not keen to fight this battle.as much as i hate to say it we will never win
(this is not a shot at what yous are doin)i think its great how much effort an wrk you guys are puttin into i just think the "ENVIROMENT" will always win

How do I become a licensed tour operator? Then we can ride Smile

Brad just remind these blokes that we ride with risks each time we are there, it's the nature of it. Also remind them whilst ever its closed they could be seen to be contributing to illegal riding by withholding use of the facility.

G'day Gents,

Couldn't agree more. I have no doubt they would have taken note if anyone was found to be riding while it's closed as well. Another black mark against RVA users.

I find it funny how it works and can only think that the threat of restraint of trade is a fear they have. Obviously the threat of a tour related injury must not come into it as they would have to have their own insurance and public liability.

Cheers Brad.

lol, maybe they've done it? finally gotten everyone off the beach like they wanted.

I've been hearing from a mate of mine that works for NSW State Forests that all government agencies like NSW Parks and Wildlife, State Forests and anything else are all getting merged into one privately owned group. I'm not saying this is all part of it, this might be just coincidence...But still wonder how they'll got about it if it does get privatised?

This just another example of the nanny state we live in, if people took responsibility for there actions & not look to sue people for there dumb "profanity removed" decisions we wouldnt have to be protected from ourselves. The rangers carnt drive around without getting bogged, so we the dumb public obviously carnt in there opinion, There just soft cocks.

well, kinda... at the end of the day they're doing their job. If someone came into my shop and said "you can't cut meat for crap" I'd be unpleasant towards them too. I'm just saying that I head this along the great vine but don't take that as gospel, people who work for government agences hear about the information last.

I think the time has come that we start making some noise.
They need to understand that we have invested money into our bikes, riding gear, rego, beach permits, trailers etc. with the understanding that we can ride.
Nature is taking too long if they are waiting for it to fix its self so with all the money we have given them they should be either letting us ride or paying for an excavator to fix it.
There is an obligation towards our safety from them and i get that but there is also an obligation to deliver a product that they effectively have sold us.
Can anyone tell me who we contact about inquiries? That Mick Murphy bloke? The squeakiest wheel gets the most oil. If we sit here going blah blah blah they will use this as a way of closing the RVA.

"with all the money we give them"
I payed my conditional rego to the RTA not Parks. The $386.00 whatever it is doesn't go to the Parks
The $30 permit does. There are a lot of $30 permits to pay for a purpose built trailer parking carparking for quad riders
Ring parks and find out the facts instead of inventing stories or call Brad A little truth goes a long way

Some mates of mine rode on the weekend and they survived and the tours were still operating...
They said the beach is fine
I guess the npws just wanted to give it a chance before it got hammered over the school holidays
You could ring mick murphy to get some updated details but i dont think theyll open the rva just cause we want it
Its all very frustrating

Parks and Wildlife are government...RTA (RMS now) are government
you don't honestly think that they get paid off of $30 beach passes? Do you?

G'day folks,

I spoke to NPWS again today and hopefully I can give you all some good news tomorrow night.

I'm told we should be right to head back on Saturday, just waiting on the official documents.

As always soon as I get them will pass them on.

Cheers Brad.

Partially CLOSED areas Worimi Conservation Lands including Stockton Beach. - Stockton Bight

On Saturday the 30th June 2012, the beach front & Recreational Vehicle Area will re-open for driving, subject to favourable conditions.

For your safety the following temporary restrictions apply:
Drive only on the beach front, or in the Recreational Vehicle Area (RVA).
The RVA, which is located South of the Lavis Lane access, is open for dune driving.
All dunes between the Lavis Lane and Anna Bay accesses are CLOSED to driving.
The park is currently CLOSED for all camping.
Access via Lavis Lane or Anna Bay entrances only.

Please be aware that if the beach becomes impassable due to changes in conditions, it may be temporarily CLOSED to all vehicles, for public safety.

ON THE SPOT FINES, AND/OR PROSECUTION APPLY.

TIDE WARNING:

At high tide, sections of the beach may be impassable, plan your trip to travel at low tide. If the beach front is too narrow to pass safely, retrace your route. Do not attempt to bypass around the dunes.

It is recommended you do not drive on the beach 2 hours before & after high tide.

http://www.bom.gov.au/oceanography/tides/MAPS/nsw.shtml

On Saturday 30 June, there will be a large high tide (1.78m) at 5.09pm.

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS:
Soft sand remains in the park.
Drive safely and according to conditions.
It is recommended that you assess your 4WD's capability for these particular conditions.
Changing weather conditions including wind direction, swell & tides, may affect your ability to enter/exit the beach.

Temporary signs are installed, and NPWS Rangers will be patrolling the park daily, to provide information & ensure compliance.

G'day Folks,

Forbes will post the official release shortly.

Finally some good news.

Please see the attached file NPWS sent me today. The RVA is back open.

This is good news, however, given the situation, it is imperative people follow the rules and stay inside the RVA.

NPWS warned me all this week that if it was reopened and people where found outside the area it would load their gun.

Inside the RVA you will find 3 or 4 new flagged of areas. It took a great deal of effort to convince them to reopen. If people enter these new off limit zones, it will load their gun. These areas are of course the newly uncovered historical artefacts.

I know it sounds like I’m harping, but the facts now lie before us, if you are caught doing the wrong thing they will impose consequences, and of course load the gun for the consequence which will affect us all.

But back to the good news the beach is reopened as from Saturday morning, 8am. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact NPWS or myself for something minor.

Cheers Brad.
