It's Dakar Time!!!!!!!!........

The Dakar will be upon us soon and as the quad coverage is pretty poor I thought I would post all I can find from the many sites covering the race.
If you find any quad stuff, have picks, questions or thoughts then stick it here.

Dakar web site

Three years into the reign of the Patronelli brothers, the first signs are emerging that Spanish-speaking pilots could soon lose their grip on the quad category. The Polish clan, for example, could very well upset the Argentinean and Chilean pilots...

Growing interest in quads and the unique sensations they provide, together with the traditional culture of cross-country racing in South America, has helped the quad category flourish ever since the Dakar first came to this continent in 2009. 40 quads representing 12 nationalities will be on the start line in Lima on January 5, a threefold increase on the 13 quads which featured in the last Dakar in Africa. Half of pilots in the field hail from one of the three host countries. They have not only been the most numerous contingent in the last few editions of the Dakar, but also the strongest, with Spanish-speaking pilots claiming 9 out of 12 podium places in the last four years!

However, ominous clouds are gathering on the horizon. The Patronellis' family saga enters a new chapter full of twists and turns as Marcos finds himself without two-time champion Alejandro, who is skipping this year's rally for professional reasons. Marcos already proved he was unfazed by solitude when he won the rally in 2010, but this year round he will come up against much tougher rivals on the tracks and dunes. The Argentinean clan will put up a strong fight in the shape of young Tomás Maffei, who is ready to step out of the Patronellis' shadow and improve on last year's third place. Other big names from South America are Chile's Ignacio Casale and Uruguay's Sergio La Fuente, who rounded off the Top 5 in the last edition and are hungry for more.

But the greatest threat could very well come from overseas. Poland's Łukasz Łaskawiec and Rafał Sonik finished on the podium in 2011 and 2009, respectively, but they were struck off the quad general classification last year because their vehicles did not meet the technical requirements laid down in the rulebook. They will be extra careful and extra determined to win this year. Newcomers to a discipline are rarely ranked among the favourites, but it would be unfair to slap the "rookie" label on a pilot like Kees Koolen, who has already finished the Dakar in a motorcycle and a single-seat buggy and is now eager for a new challenge in this category. It would be even more unfair for Emirati Sebastian Husseini, who has never had a taste of the Dakar before but was crowned World Champion in 2007. He and his famous driving skills have South American quad pilots trembling in their boots.

Dakar web site.....

Recent winner of the Australasian Safari and two-time Desert Finke champion, Paul Smith is set to become the first Australian to start the Dakar on a quad. The 34-year-old dairy farmer was given the opportunity to compete in the world's biggest off-road rally by team GHR Honda. The Aussie is a real competitor. His ambition, other then finishing the Dakar is to power to a spot on the podium in Santiago. And to do so, Paul has prepared intensely, working on his navigation, riding his mountain-bike for long hours and even sleeping in an altitude tent to adapt to the tough conditions in the Andes.

“The Dakar has been on my mind ever since the days when Andy Caldecott was riding it. GHR Honda gave me the opportunity to do it and I took it with both hands. Obviously my goal is to finish but I'm a competitor and I hope to make it on the podium. I know it's going to be hell on a race track, having to deal with the altitude, the heat, the tough terrain. What worries me is the navigation and using the GPS. There's also the lack of sleep factor. It's a whole new ball game for me.”

All the best Smithy!
If nothing else, you'll be able to teach them how to drink properly.

I head back to Lima on the 1st to catch up with the rest of the team. I'm not sure how much Internet ill have on the rally so hopefully Linc can keep you updated.

A mate of mine is part owner of the Lima Rugby Restobar in Lima. Pop in and say G'day to Wylksy if you are in need of a cold sherbert. Tell him Arron Mcleod says hello Smile

Day 1 is Sat night our time. It all starts with a short special stage that should seed the riders for day 2. Riders start day 1 in order of their ranking according to the ASO.

..........................

Liaison sections: 250 km
Special stage: 13 km

Setting the scene. It won’t be long before competitors will be singled out, but for the moment, the mini special stage organised on the outskirts of Pisco will principally be used to divide up the drivers into categories according to their level, who in turn will reassemble during the rally. The initial stage won’t be as stiff as the drink that made the region famous, but the picture postcard landscape is especially appealing. The concentration required over the several timed kilometres will still allow the competitors to admire the scenery. Nevertheless, the light-hearted attitude and relaxed driving style adopted by the competitors during this first day must not mislead them: the Dakar has really begun.

Scrutineering starts tomorrow for those vehicles that have not done it already. With over 850 vehicles entered including support scrutineering is a mamoth task. With that said European entries are done in France before they are loaded on the ship.

All support vehicles are checked just like the race vehicles. Every support vehicle must be 4x4 and have a FIA approved roll cage.

Pete and Smitty are with the GHR team and they have a pretty impressive truck and an AUDI Q7 FRV.

No idea Barn, but I'd keep an eye on SBS as they usually run a summary each night on the world news.

As previously stated the 1st stage is only 13km (+250km Liason) and will determine the start order for day 2. On previous rally's the real feld off a bit so as not to be the first guy on the road on Day 2.

It has just been dropped on us that the first stage times will be multiplied by a factor of 5..........!!!!!!!!!

If you drop 1 min on the opening stage then you will be 5 min down on the overall time sheet.

Tonights opening stage (our time) will be a Sh!t fight. Quads open the race in reverse order. Smitty will be on the road in about 15th place.
