hello All,
I have just registered on this forum on the advice from the dude I just bought 2 70,s from (73mod and 7?}. I am going to get my family into triking as I did have a 70 and 185 way back when i was an apprentince. What I want to do is put lifan 160 motors in them , I have been getting conflicting info from websites in usa and just need to know if its a no cut up of the frame., I am in newcastle and own a machine shop with CNC lathes mills ect, If there is anyone that can help me I may be able to help them with thier problem in a machining way.
I cant wait to get on the sand with my family and cut loose. cheer _________________ An old fella having a mid life motorised crisis |

Gday and welcome to the site its always good to see new members joining up.Especially ones that love modding 70's lol.Youll sure be welcomed on here mate.As for the 160's youll find youll have to probabbly cut the shape a little in the frame but basically very easy to do fit an exhaust (couple of different ways you can go about that)prob custom manifold. Then a way to start it which the best way in my opinion is to machine a spacer plate an adapt the 70 pull starter. And by the sounds of it you shouldnt have a drama as owning a machine shop im sure is a big help lol.
Also have you checked out the ride day we are having on aus day would be good if ya came an met the crew more the merrier. _________________ 1984 ATC 300R, 1986 TRX 500R,1984 ATC 200X, ATC 70 WITH CUSTOM LAYDOWN 250R ENGINE, 125CC CUSTOM THUMPSTER TRIKE |

thanks riders for the warm welcome, Unfortunately I cant make it on the 26th , wanted too, but prior comitments. So to fit a 160 cutting the frame has to be done because,#length of motor to front wheel/guard, or just a different mounting hole centres, I am a little apprehensive of cutting an original frame but if it needs to be done. what about the 140cc motors , same deal?
I really like those daytona motors , but at the end of the day spending that much on them I should have bought a 250r.
I weigh 95kg so its about getting me moving, me eldest son 83kg and my youngest 40kg . two trikes need 140 to 160 motors and keep one std for riley to learn.
all your advice and experience is welcome. _________________ An old fella having a mid life motorised crisis |

Welcome mate. Thought I'd stick my 2cents worth in....
Any of the laydown/pitbike style engines will bolt into the frame of a atc70. Ive got a 110cc and a 125cc in two of my trikes at the moment.
They both clear the front guards on stock frames, but only just.
The 140cc and up engines have a longer barrel, and the head will hit the guard. Some people just remove the guard (looks bodge),
while others do it properly and extend the frame by an inch and a half/two inches...
The rear tank mount stays in the same spot and the front tank mounts get moved back the same distance as the extension,
this way it looks neater with no gap between the seat and tank. Just cut and sleave the top tube....easy.
Stretching the frame makes them more comfortable to ride for "bigger kids" too...( adults.. )
Another mod is to lower the foot pegs. Good for the "bigger kids" as your knees arnt up around your ears as much.
Cut the welds holding the foot peg 'bar' to the plate it mounts to, then rotate the pegs downward and re-weld.
They sit forward and up, but doing this you can have them forward and down a bit. Again, a couple of inches makes a difference.
Use atc90/110 foot pegs for this mod if you like, as they are a bit wider too...
Now, engines.....
Biggest issue is starting...There are many ways to tackle this problem.
You can keep the kick start and fab a hinge mount to swing the seat and fender up and back.
You need wheel spacers for this mod or the kickstarter hits the tire.....
You can fit pullstarts, like Mart said. I did this to my Lifan 125.
Not hard to do. Plenty of info and even parts and full kits are avalible from:
www.dratv.com
www.atc70.com
www.hondaatc70.com
I can help with detailed info on the pullstart conversion if you want.
Mind you, kick-back can hurt the fingers!!
Even my 125 has got me a few times, so a 150/160cc high compression engine.....well, work it out for yourself.
So, we come to electric start.....much easier in the long run.
No flip up seats, no pullstart conversions and broken fingers....but a tad more expensive.
I got one of these a while ago:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/140907272277?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_2020wt_825
Its great, its in my sons trike, although he is now 15 and looking for more power, it goes realy well.
Wind in the throttle stop, or restrict the exhaust and fit a smaller (18mm) carbie, and your youngest could ride it easy!
No clutch, semi-auto like the stock 70 engine.
Open it up as he gets bigger and more experienced.
Next on the list is this!
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261003457654?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_534wt_825
This is the one you want for you and your eldest son. 15hp is plenty to get you moving. Yes, a bit more expensive, but worth it.
Also, you might want to lock the rear sprocket. They are rubber damped for smoother shifting on the stock engine,
but with more power you can shear the rubber blocks in half.
Drill 4 holes through it and put 4 bolts through the thing and be done with it.
Doing this you will get snappier, instant response anyway...better for wheelies and powerslides!
You can also fit a atc90/110 complete rear axle/carrier/brake assembly into the 70 frame if you want.
Its a bit wider, heavier duty and has a larger brake drum.
No rubber damped sprocket either... Detailed info can be supplied on this mod as well....
After all this you can go down the road of suspension, been done, much info is avalible. I'm building one of these at the moment....
Heaps of info here too....
