G'day guys, got an 85 70 that I've had for a couple of years.
2 years ago at Easter it stopped and I couldn't get it to restart.
Fast forward to now and my young son sees me on the 200es and now sits on the 70 making noises lol.
Anyway, i'm going to give the bike to him in the next year but really want to get it going for while we are camping at easter.
The tank has some rust which I have a kit for but wont have time to do that in the next couple of weeks, I've already cleaned the carb and it has spark but still no luck.
I have a new (chinese) carb here just in case.
I've decided that i'm going to get a cdi conversion from atc heaven and a new condenser. was going to get a coil but they are out of stock.
I figure fit all of that up and clean contacts plug lead, new plug, fresh fuel and check the carb.
If that doesn't work, then will try the new carb.
Hoping to have that done this week.
Now if none of that works then was hoping someone in Sydney or Newcastle who is good with 70's might be able to help me out if I bring the bike to you (i'm away from home at the moment and don't have many tools).
Happy to pay cash or beer etc.
If anyone has a new coil I could buy please let me know
cheers _________________ 70s FTW!

| is it getting fuel into the engine? try taking out the plug and putting a small amount in through the plug hole.. re assemble and kick her in the guts.. if it goes.. problem is fuel... you are using fresh fuel BTW? |

I think the spark is the issue as it seems to be weak/random.
CDI kit arrived today but I don't have a flywheel puller.
Does anyone have one who also knows how to rewind pull starters, last time I tried "profanity removed" went everywhere. _________________ 70s FTW!

I would be making sure the points contact surfaces are flat (may need filing) and has a 0.4-0.5mm gap. Also put a car condenser on it, it doesn't need to be behind the flywheel and the old one can stay connected. This is what I would do first in fact. Go to your favourite auto parts place and ask for a 1 wire condenser. Connect the wire to the wiring anywhere between the bottom end and the coil. Make sure the body of the condenser is grounded, you can bolt it down with the coil.
Also a cdi coil is different to the honda coil on the 70 |

It lives!
Bought a puller and changed over to the CDI. wasn't too hard.
Had spark but it was weak, so I replaced the coil with an MCS item.
Much better.
New fuel lines, cleaned the carb and it runs!.
One problem. Had to splice into the wire to the coil to run un to the kill switch as the same as the old one, now on anything more than idle my kill switch is starting to fizzle and crackle with a small amount of smoke. Could it be the extra voltage is causing the issue?
I might just by an mx style kill switch and run it on the left of the bars would that work ok? Do I need a certain style of switch? _________________ 70s FTW!

No don't do that!!!
A cdi setup has a kill switch wire on the cdi box. Honda use a black wire with a yellow trace??? Run this to the kill switch. Other wore on the switch goes to ground. Your only issue is the kill switch works backwards I think. |
