Just a quick question about the Tri-Z cooling system.

I know they are supposed to come factory with a thermostat housing.. Is it Ok to run a T-piece to replace it?

My bike came to me like this but I have not run it (apart from a couple of laps of a suburban backyard haha)

So really, i'm just wondering if any fellow Tri-Z owner's are running without thermostats?

Hey mate,
I run my 85 without a thermostat, the housing is still there but its just empty. Im pretty sure you can take the thermostat out and replace it with the T peice you are talking about. Basically once the thermostat is removed its just a t peice anyway! I have only kept the original housing to maintain factory look, just remember that your temp warning light on the headlight bezel wont work without the housing/ thermostat there.

Hi matgod,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, that makes sense. When I got my bike, it already had a billet T piece in place of the thermostat but I still haven't properly run the bike yet and just thought i'd ask the question before it gets a run.

Also, that leads me to another question. Does the temp warning light plug into a temp sensor on the thermostat housing? What colour are the wires for that?

My bike came with a numberplate fitted inlace of headlights and I just recently found a black headlight setup and got it shipped from the US. (I'm trying to keep the bike fairly factory)

Hi terminal.

You will be fine with the billet T piece lots of guys racing trikes in the states run them for reliability.

The The temp warning light does plug into the thermostat housing via green cable with a blue line running along the side of it, i have taken a picture to show you how it works.

It the brass sensor with the Female fitting on it.

Hope this helps.

So is yours a 85.5 Red and black?
Sounds good

I thought that might be the case. Thanks for going to the trouble of getting the photo. I might end up running the thermostat housing with no thermostat too. Just to have that water temp sensor.

Yeah, I've got an 85.5. Your machine looks to be in great condition, they're getting harder and harder to find decent condition tri-z's.

No worrys

The warning light will only properly work is there is an actual thermostat in the housing, however if you put just the housing in and reconnect the wire, it will light up red on initial start up for about 2 seconds. This is just a start up feature they do. With out the actual thermostat though it wont activate when the machine gets to hot.

Thanks for the advice. Do you know if you can still get new thermostats or are we just stuck to using the old ones?
