 |
|
I just though I post a short report as I seen most of the race from the side lines. Just as the DMCC wanted to entrench the Bob Jane Kamfari 500 as the toughest atv race in the world with new format 5 hours with a enduro cross style section for massive of crowd of 700.
High drama all day as field of 27 reduced to 8 by the checked flag . Nathen Thring riding NT Motorcycle Centre Yamaha Grizzly 700 won the grueling event a lap up on Ross Caswell Can Am Territory Marine who broke his left thumb on the third lap but continued for second.
Womens Class was Won by Vivian Hoy (vjcrose) Scrambler 500 (Polaris Smokin' Trailers Racing) 3 laps down on the winner but seventh overall. The hard luck story of the day was Waldo Hussie who was 2 laps up on the entire field. The checked flag only minutes away and burnt the belt on his Can Am 800.
Eddie Talingham rode his Blaster 200 to last place but finished.(legend) The challenge is to finish. The highlight for me was the second corner pile up in a 2 foot deep creek. By the time I got there 3 quads were up side down in the water. Waldo is just awesome to watch. Walking back to the pits Waldo had 3 minute lead already. The sound and horse power of his Renegade X 800 is just something else . His Mudzillas just seem dig handful type scoops of earth and just rooster tailing everywhere.
Just a few stats Can Am 14 started 2 finished
Polaris 4 1
Yamaha 3 3
Suzuki 2 2
Kawasaki 3 0
After 2 hours 2 deep lagoons swallowed a couple of spectators quads and was moved to higher ground. Over 40 bikes competed on separate track . Brad Williscroft won Shane Diener second and local Chip Parry 3rd. Melissa Holmes took out the ladies class. Jason Hill received the Hard luck award with his severed fuel line removing him from 1st position 3 hours into the race.
The event was a huge success for the club and next year will be 39th running of Kamfari 500.
I will post some pics and video over the next couple of days.

Waldo was flying - he was awesome - I would love to ride like him however - 1 slip up and it hurts and I still have to get up for the kids in the night thats if I am home from hospital
Some photos - courtesy of Xpodz photography = more can be seen and purchased online at http://x-pozd.com/ntevents/index.php?cPath=1502_1751_1756&osCsid=2af455f7ebe2e2e1b17989997d9f31af
The quad boys won the drinking comp later too - sculling the remainer of the champers after showering the crowd....
thanks bullet and postie - have to thank V8toy for doing the majority of the bike prep on the Polaris scrambler 500 (without him we would have struggled a lot more) and tjdnough for washing my goggles also these guys and goat helped me keep on the gas - coming around and see them waving was enough to keep me going - just as well i couldn't hear what they were saying (send her in the deep end. yeah drown her out etc - captured on the video they recorded) _________________ Family is most important.... next is our quads

So that's how you NT types wash your quads.
Seems to work pretty well. _________________ Can-Am X Team

Not quite - it's only annual
I used to think it was a great way of washing the quads but goat complains when I do as following this style wash is a lot of maintenance - greasing and replacing bearings etc - He only allows it once a year
also my washing machine was making some unusual noises last night - my gear was a little chucky cause i was too tired to top dress the lawn with a rinse first _________________ Family is most important.... next is our quads |

that video looks awesome. Just wondering what stopped all the can-ams?? 2 finishers from 14 starters, did they have similar mechanical problems or rider problems? The one in the video looks like it hauls, sounds mean too! _________________ Proud Member of QuadridersSA

The can ams suffer a lot with flat tyres (all spares and tools must be carried on bike or rider and no outside assistance).
When I was draining my belt (best to stop for a couple of minutes and drain it rather than DNF)a can am caught me and he had 2 flat fronts and was just trying to get back to the pits. Waldos and a couple of others burnt out belts. I helped one can am off a log and his belt was smokin (this is the fella who 4 years ago told me chicks couldn't finish Kamfari - to date I have finished 4 times and he has tried and failed 4 times). The little blaster got caught on that log too but it was much lighter to lift off than the 800 can am.
1 can am who finished did so with a broken left thumb and the other still had no feeling in his right forearm last night.
One kwaka killed his tie rod....
Both 2x4 outlaws - one very stock - DNF
Not sure what happened to the rest
Kamfari is not just about being the fittest and fastest on the day but bike prep and looking after your bike so you last the distance. Many people underestimate the importance of riding smart and the adrenalin does them a disservice. - I know from my own mistakes _________________ Family is most important.... next is our quads |

Burning belts is caused by bigger tyres 27 and 28 inch Mudzillers . How do you gear a Belt Drive? Flat tyres due to clipping trees at 70 to 80kph in the forest section. the Bark off the trees wedges between the tyre and the rim. Probably tyre tire balls are the answer. Bead locks just peel off like sardine tin lids. By mid race your buggered, wet and hot your gloves have holes in them, your boots are full, you threw goggles away 2 laps ago, Waldo fills ya in lapping ya again. Tree jumps in front of you. Its all over
All great fun

[quote="Huskygoat"]Burning belts is caused by bigger tyres 27 and 28 inch Mudzillers . How do you gear a Belt Drive?
Is it the CVT belt burning or do they have a final drive belt like a harley? Cant you mess around with roller weights and spring tensions in the CVT to alter the performance of the CVT for different tyres? I know messing around with these on the eton viper 90 CVT made a big difference on the power delivery. Getting water in the CVT wouldn't be a good thing for belt slippage and burning, perhaps rigging up a funky snorkel breather like the yokel mudder types from the US do might be the go. _________________ Proud Member of QuadridersSA
