DAY 7.
300km away was our first and only special stage of the last day of the Safari. To get there we transversed the back roads between Geralton and just North of Perth. Mostly 80 and 100kph zones with little or no traffic just us racers.
I got to the start of the special at around mid-day and they told us about some hairy water holes that had to be avoided; we would be diverted at about the 50km mark.
I followed the well marked diversion and soon came to a large pond covering the marked route. On the other side were a load of stranded cars, bikes and officials. The Helicopter hovered above and all the waiting media pionted their cameras square at me.
There seemed no way around and it was obvious that even though there were a bunch of machines stranded, also a bunch had got through. I waided in just as a guy ran out from the other side waiving his arms at me. No stopping now I was in and still moving; the water was getting deeper and one side of the quad had now slipped in to an under water rut.
Churning water and sand I was still edging forward when a car came past on my left, they were moving along at a good pace and they would have only been a meter off my wheels. Swamp; the wake comming off this thing washed over the whole quad, and that was it, the engine died and I was stuck.
I eventually pulled the thing across and sat in disbelief at what had just happened. I knew there was not much chance but I tried anyway; I gave it a kick..........the kicker would not move. I popped the seat to get a look at the air box; it was full to the brim with water I couldn't even see the filter.
All the bike guys, all the officials, everyone gave me a hand, lent tools or even did the work themselves; you name it we did it. Nothing would make this thing go......Thats it I'm out. 160km to go on the last day. So close....F%(*)^# !!!!!!.
An official looking guy came over to have a chat with the bike guys and myself. It was Deputy Clerk of the Course Ron Rigby, he pointed to the bikers and said "sorry guys you've timed out" he then looked at me and asked if I thought I could get going again (coz I got there later and hadn't timed out) and added "If I was you I would put in official complaint against those idiots in the Land Rover". It had never crossed my mind that they had taken me out, I was to consumed with getting to Perth. I told him I could not go on.
I told Ron that I wans't interested in retrebution just being a fininsher. "Well have you pulled out of any other days?" he asks.
"yes, Day 3" I say with more than a hint dissapointment "but on 2 days I've been pulled out coz of light or accidents"
"We did that not you"......."I think you'll be an official finisher and if I remember right that means you've won your class right" I still didn't really believe it.
The TRX was loaded up in to a F-250 and I jumped in for the ride to Perth........I was spewin' all the way there; the world sucks, everything sucks............will I be an offical finisher?.

FINAL
That night was presentation at Glauster Park and I was still pretty down on what had happened that day. Even if the rules say I finished fair and square, I didn't ride across that line in Perth. I still didn't know for sure if I was classed a finisher or not.
Beep Beep Beep......SMS from my brother: You are listed on the net as fourth quad and first in class.
As I walked in and found my table I was congratulated by more than one team on finishing and being a winner.
Dinner was nice, a glass of wine became a bottle of wine and I wasn't stoppin'. Stuff em' all I finished the Safari.......yeah!!!!!!!.
"Quad Class"........"First in Class Q1 Super Production Quads under 500cc Lincoln Marks"........I lept up like some half pissed idiot (coz I was half pissed) and collected my prize. A few minuites later I was called up again for first team prize (with Smitty & Bullet).
Sitting down I look at my two trophies and across the table at my team mates who had theirs; it all seems a bit unreal.......it was real, we did it.
I had another (bottle) wine and passed out face first in my cake.
Linc
I got to thank a few people for the safari is a team effort.
Thanks to:
My fellow riders Paul Smith & Daryl Knight. Every night we discussed the days stage and what we were up for the following day; we kept each other sane and on the job at hand - there was so many things to do it was easy to get distracted.
Mick from 47Industries and his band of merry X-Men. SPECIAL MENTION : Pete and Colin for keeping the quad going for 7 days.
Octagon for putting on such a great event and for pushing to have the quads entered in the first place - it was their word with the Gov of W.A. that got us in there.
AUSTRACO - ITP Wheels and tyres - I used ITP beadlocks with ITP Holeshot GNCC tyres. As mentioned I received one punchure and finished on the same set of tyres I started on. I had spares, I didn't use them.
AC - All of my protection was AC, bumper, nerfs and skids; all came through for me. The skids are trashed; not one inch doesn't have a gouge in it. There is no way my rear brake and sprocket would have made it without this protection. The bottom of my frame and swingarm are untouched, they really did their job.

Link, I had a similar thing happen at the water Xing. The thing sank and would not move. It was running but only just. Quik thinking I turned her off so as to not fill it up with water and when I stepped off, to my astonishment, it floated! I could not believe it! I was balls deep in water and I walked my quad across to the other side like a boat!
I opened the air box and just had a few drops in there (lucky). The exhaust however was full of water. She would not start.... I tried again and then thought thats it, leading the race and now to DNF on the last day! I gave her another go and she gave a little cough... a hint of life!..... I crossed my fingers and hit the starter again and she sputtered to life. Lots of water comming out of the pipe but she was running. I rode light for about 2k's and pulled up to see if the oil was milky. It was fine so off to Perth I rode where I got stopped by the police..... twice!... but that's another story _________________ When I'm racing I'm living..... everything else is just waiting. |

68 mph is a pretty good top speed for a Bus.

Great phots Dom.
How's Chris's Blown 392 HEMI powered Street Rod. He was cool enough to take me for a little spin. I feel very lucky. Even his dad has not gone for a ride in it yet! This is one of Anthony's friends that he deals with for some of the Muscle Cars. He came around the other day with a street legal V8 LC Torana that is good for low 10 second 1/4 mile runs. Just one of the cool cars he has on offer.
After persistant "can we see the whales dad?" I had to give in and take the kids to see them. That was special.
Man, there are so many stories to tell about this ride. _________________ When I'm racing I'm living..... everything else is just waiting. |

I guess that is what happens when a bike is bounced down the road at 150 km/h. Just unlucky. _________________ When I'm racing I'm living..... everything else is just waiting. |
