Have been asked by Husky and Mrs Goat to post the following information, regarding fly with the Byrd race 1 in Darwin.

First -Joe Byrd By approx 500 metres
Second- Ryan Lancaster
Third- Chris Brenton
Fourth- Mitchell Van Vliet
I apologise if any names are spelt incorrectly i could barely hear them on the phone.
Looks like the Yamahas and the Hondas are the machines to beat.

Great to see young Mitch place 4th. He has a big future in Quad racing.
16 years old and is already a fantastic rider.

For all the Yamaha -Mitch supporteres, please note i am told he is racing a borrowed bike, imagine how good he would be doing on his own quad.

Guys the day was great success A few more in the crowd would have been nice but it was hot today as all week. Around 1100 spectators witnessed Joe ride. And our local Guys rode the wheels off their quads but Joe is a level above. The most noticeable thing was he didn't jump high he seem like he was in slow motion in the air but when he hit the ground he was at full noise. Joe had to derate his quad because of fuel but he still could pull a length on the start straight. Very proud of Ryan Chris and Mitch for great attitude for racing and developing our sport in Australia. Joe Has booked in to come back next year to Darwin but bring another pro and some up and coming youngsters .

Just for interest our brightest young bike rider who rides the Australia U19's was lapping at 1min 13sec and Joe was Lapping at 1min 14sec . so If they were on the track together they be side by side. Transponder times should be up shortly.

Would be great for Joe to come back next year and bring some friends.
With Chris B and Ryan L going to usa next year to race, imagine how much better they will be and that will really make a great race

Hey Guys there was 8 on Grid. We limited it to ten because of the track width . Ant yewers was a late withdrawal and Waldo withdrew with surprise surprise quad problems (won't say what make) . My laps will have it up shortly.

0437 294 499 is my number just bit over quads after the last 2 months.

PostPosted: Sun Sep 14, 2008 11:33 am Post subject: Fly With The Byrd - Darwin Reply with quote Back to top

On behalf of the Territory Quad Association we want to thank the interstate riders for making the trip up to Darwin - Ryan Lancaster, Chris Brenton, Mitchell Van Vliet and junior riders - Chris Bosnakis and Oliver Aston. We know the long trip was worth it for them. To see Joe in action and to have the opportunity to race against him was nothing short of awesome. There were eight riders in the pro class - Joe Byrd, Ryan Lancaster, Chris Brenton, Mitchell Van Vliet, Blake Waldmann, Matthew Stone, Ross Caswell and John Johnson. Each moto was ten laps, around 15 minutes long. As you know by now Joe placed first (what a surprise), 2nd Ryan Lancaster, 3rd Chris Brenton, 4th Mitchell Van Vliet, 5th Matthew Stone, 6th Blake Waldmann, 7th John Johnson and 8th Ross Caswell. Joe was well in front by at least a third of a lap in each of the moto's, with Chris and Ryan pretty even for second and third. Blake Waldmann tried to give Mitchell Van Vliet a run, but couldn't quite make it, he then had mechanical problems and retired after race 2. Fly With The Byrd was our best turnout in Darwin for quad numbers and it gave our local boys something to aim for. The Joe Byrd Riding School was a huge success, everyone learnt a lot, from the juniors to the seniors - lap times were taken at the start of the school and by the end of the school all riders had improved their lap times, from 7 seconds for senior riders, 20 seconds for juniors. There's nobody that couldn't learn something from his schools, he tailors it to your abilities. Fly With The Byrd was a big success, would have been nice to have had more spectators.

the pro class line up was

joe byrd
ryan lancaster
chris brenton
mitch van vileit (spelling)
blake waldamn (local boy)
mat stone (local boy)
ros caswell (local boy)
john ? (local boy)

they were 10 lap motos the track is pretty short distance track but very technical thru the entre with step on step offs (joe made these look easy) small double triple and a couple of table top thru to singles,
straight outa the first corner was about a 40ft step down this caught me out at the school overshooting it by bout a bike length and flat landing it a boy did it hurt it also caught lancaster out on the pro practice and he overshot it more than me and damaged his bike, pretty sure he cracked the swingarm and had to use his second bike.
But as huskygoat said joe was just lighting fast and even though he was clearing everything (as u'd expect) he was just so low and threw the bike around effortlessly he was also the only one that i witnessed having to back off for the jumps his bike was just sex on wheels

but i do have to say if it wasnt for my gf letting me pilfer the parts of her bike so i could race i wouldnt have learnt nothin from joe and thanks to joe for teachin me how to fry a set of brake pads in one meet lol

pics will be soon we are waiting for them to uploaded by the photographers

cheers

It was an awesome day, good racing throughout the day - wish we'd had a few more spectators.

Young Blake rode a couple of great races and kept Mitch honest all day. Mitch and Blake are the best teenagers in the country at the moment . Bring on the Nationals. laughing

Hey Oz 450 looks like Blake Waldmann and Locky Stone will be the only ones travelling to tassie. End of Year exams has canned all of the kids.
