Good luck guys, you'll have the time of your life.
Looks like only the car will struggle.

Yeah, good observation. We're worried about that, too. One good stuck in a bowl and we're done for.

The Ford Expedition is enormous! And enormously heavy. To complicate things, it's also pulling our trailer loaded with supplies.

Power is good with the V8 pushing out 310 HP and enough torque to pull a bulldozer, but in soft sand that's not going to help much when the wheels start spinning.

Al Tayer, the Ford dealer in the UAE, has modified the truck with a suspension lift, wider tyres, metal bumpers, extra fan, etc., so we do have a properly set-up beast.

We're also carrying a set of 4 sand ladders, which are great for self-recovery.

Other than that, we've got shovels! laughing

We're going to have to choose our track very conservatively, and when in doubt hit the sand hard to keep momentum going.

The best advice I can give you is
LEAVE THE TRAILER AT HOME !
Pack lighter and smarter it will be a benifit in the long run.
When we did the Simson Desert the trailers where the handy cap.
First day - 3 to 4 hours on the first dune.
Have a winch fitted and use the spare tyre to winch off.

That's good advice - wish I could.

Problem is we need the trailer to get the quads to starting point, and then to pick the quads up at ending point.

Maybe we could make a bio-degradable trailer out of paper mache and leave it there! LOL

Possible bad news... very bad news! Brother Marco meets up with a difficult situation with his business and if he cannot resolve it within the next 48 hours - he's out!!!

Great work by Al Tayer! Cool

Today I picked up the Ford Expedition and learnt a lot about it.

See the photos yourselves, but let me tell you the effect is excellent - quality decals cover the entire car (also protecting the new paint) and overall the sheer momentous stance of the Expedition really speaks of adventure.

It is a 2009 model, brand new, and it has been lifted 2 inches to provide better ground clearance. Wider tyres have been fitted to maximize traction in soft sand, and the front bumper has been replaced with a hardcore off-road metal bumper - which amazingly is perfect in fit and contour shape! Quality finish, I have seen very few bumpers so well made and fitted!

Additionally, metal skid plates have been installed, as well as an auxiliary fan (for summer, useful, for us, maybe) and also two spare tyres have been provided.

A+ work!

I drove home to Al Ain and it runs smooth and true, unlike the off-roading beast it is underneath its polish!

A pleasant surprise also on the consumption front, 17 litres to 100km average, and a full tank gives us autonomy of 650km - so much more than I had calculated!!! Man, now what am I going to do with all those gas canisters I bought!?!

Very happy, and my wife already remarked I should ask about keeping it after the trip... LOL

Tomorrow we test in the sand! Cool

Hi guys great trip!!
But if you want to break a world record then you gonna have to ride longer.
I already done the same across the UAE for a 2000kms trip last year...the main difference is we did it without assistance vehicle carrying our own fuel, food and water!!
More details: http://www.adventure-rally.com/spip.php?rubrique38

good luck then!

Franck

Back from the most intense off-roading trip of my life - simply awesome!

Franck, how the heck did you carry enough fuel on your quad for 2000km???? You can't be serious, man!

Now editing the video we took, over 60 hours of continuous recording - got it almost finished and will release on web.

We didn't make the Guinness due to border restrictions but will go for a UAE National Record. We covered just over 1000km completely off-road from Liwa to Khor Kelba.

Of course we can't but we were carrying 50 liters so we can reach gas station from time to time.
Actually fuel is not the main issue the real one for us was water.

Hey we should meet one day if you are in dubai!
But after my trip to argentina. the quads are in the plane right now and I am leaving tonight. Our target 5000Kms to go from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia!!

See ya in March!!
