Picked up my new addition on Saturday. Going to put the motor in for a complete rebuild this week and was after any input as to what, if any modifications I should consider doing to the motor.

These motors are pretty good standard IMO. When i rebuilt mine all i had done to it was have it bored, new piston and rings, new bottom end bearing and new crank seals. After you have the motor rebuilt i highly recommend an aftermarket pipe and silencer, removing the airbox lid and re-jetting it to suit. They run so much better when they can breathe. Mine was too restricted. Thats all mine has had done to it and you've seen it goes pretty well. If you want more you may want to get a good set of reeds, a reed spacer and maybe a bigger carby, a 34mm PJ Keihin off an 85/86 250R i hear is a good swap. They're the next performance mods im considering. Porting may be the way to go too. Good to hear your tearing into it straight away. Good Stuff Shawn!!!

Thanks for the input. Going to go down the same path as FTW, just do a rebuild for now. I am just going to pretty it up a bit, get it all back together & ride it.

What I'm up to:

Motor will be ready next week
Swingarm - repainted, new bearinings etc. Fit back on sunday
Fuel tank ready for painting

All going to plan I should be runnig in about 3 - 4 weeks

Based on info I looked at on ATC Heaven according to my engine number I have 83' model. Is there anyway of checking the chasis number for year model.

Have a look at the rear link in front of the swingarm. On the 83 it lays almost flat and the 84 it is almost straight up and down. Also on the 84 there is a spacer between the rear disc boss and the double axle lock nuts.

Wow Shawn, your really flying into it. Thats excellant mate.

These are the numbers for the '83.
Frame: Between JH3TB0606DC200001 and JH3TB0604EC300003
Engine: Between TB06E-2200004 and TB06E-2300003.

Theses are the numbers for the '84.
Frame: Between JH3TB0604EC300003 and JH3TB0605FC400001
Engine: Between TB06E-2300003 and TB06E-2400001.

Hope you have it going in 3 to 4 weeks mate. I'll have to get my finger out then. My chain came loose last weekend and ive given myself a fortnight to get it tightened!!!

Thanks for the help & info. My ATC is most definately an 83'.

Going to the motorcycle wreckers on monday to scavenge for some brakes. So that should be sorted as well.

Going to replace the exhaust system, what should I use. And can I do away with the airbox & just run something like a K&N or similar straight off the back of the carby.

Nothing wrong with the '83's mate, I swear by mine...Jamie swears AT his!
You'll have to change your "sig" now.
I think the only exhaust you'll get new is the DG. Thats what i've got and i'd defiantely buy it again, with the silencer your looking at around $500. ATC Heaven import them. Ric will hook you up. All the guys in America dont like the DG, they say to go with a Cobra, Bassini, CT etc but i think a lot of them havent even tried the DG cause i reckon they are good. Oldrodder's got one too. You can do away with the airbox if you really wanted to. What a few of the drag racers in America do is they remove there's and run a bit of piping about 2 or 3 inches long off the back of the carby then attach a filter to that, apparently it gives it a bit more go or something but i probably wouldnt, i just run a UNI-filter with a stocking/pantyhose over it and remove the airbox lid.
Whats the chance of you posting pics of this rebuild?
