Yeah I'm looking into the air cooler. It looks excellent in that photo, just looking for a current one. I'm assuming it would be kept in the same sort of condition. I just have to get it freighted to Perth.
Other than the lack of HP, are these significantly inferior to the other 85> race trikes? It certainly looks excelllent. |

To be fair though I think their wasn't a lot done to the engine on the Tecate during the restore. I think the gear level may have been welded on on the old motor (looks it in the restore photos?) and I assume being an older unrestored motor the kickstarter could have had issues too.
I agree though if you want top dollar, especially in this climate, you need to get it right before selling. I was at the point of picking this up then realised the new kickstarter hasn't arrived and the gear lever's not in place. So it's tough to even get a test run on it. Also I'm concerned if the lever's come off a few times, the gear splines are probably worn out also. It makes me question the entire motor condition which I don't feel is an issue with the Honda. |

Yeah dude, the earlier "non race" models are a real turd burger but if you rev them really hard they get LOUD! They come in RED too, the same colour as the 85> race models, thats why i bought mine...DH!

It was a genuine question. I never said the 83 was "non race", I was referring to a comparison with other 85 or newer water cooled race trikes, of any brand.
I know there was a significant horsepower difference (which doesn't concern me too much). My question was were they otherwise fairly comparable? |

In all honsty, in my opinion...Yes.
The later water cooled models did have better suspension and a little more horsepower but depending on how the trike will be used, i dont think it matters. The water cooled models had a 6 speed box though that is a lot better than the 5 speed the earlier aircooled models came with. Im happy with my trike, its an 83, it never lets me down and it goes everywhere i point it and ive pointed it everywhere. I even know a guy that swapped his 85 model for an 83 model!

that guy is me, it was a stupid mistake that I made but what can I do,I like my aircooler but it aint no waterpumper,the aircoolers are quick for what they are but there nothink compared to the 85/6 250r |

Yep thats my Tecate and yes the gear lever was welded on when i got it ( god knows why) and the kick started had a new spring and ball bearing installed but needed replacing.
They are a good looking machine but vibrate pretty bad, i didnt really like it that much, you cant beat Honda quality IMHO.
Oh Tony, what about the hubs ?

thanks for the info,
have forgotten the details, was it one or two crates you used? and did you have you turn the wheels in or anything to narrow it? also was it tied down upright (standing on grab bar)? |
