A MAN is dead and five females are in hospital following a hit and run collision southeast of Darwin.
On Saturday night a Mitsubishi Challenger with six occupants rolled several times on the Stuart Highway near Noonamah, 30kms southeast of Darwin.

Witnesses told police the vehicle collided with a Toyota Camry which was making a right hand turn into a dirt road.

The Mitsubishi rolled several times killing the male driver, believed to have been in his 70s.

Four girls aged two, five, seven and 12 were injured along with a 73-year-old woman.

They are in Royal Darwin Hospital.

Police said the driver of a silver Toyota Camry failed to stop and left the scene, heading out of Darwin.

The Camry was found abandoned on this morning south of Darwin.

A short time later an 18-year old man, alleged to have been the driver, was arrested.

Police are still investigating the crash scene and traffic is being diverted.

The Stuart Highway is expected to be closed between Livingstone Road and Townend Road for some time.


"This is a terrible tragedy for all concerned and we are again calling on motorists to do the right thing to ensure their own safety and that of other road users," Police Superintendent Michael Murphy said.

The death brings the Northern Territory road toll to six, compared to 15 for the same period last year.

Witnesses are being encouraged to to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800

well I think today was the worst day of my life. Dad Winston as everybody knew him died this morning. died while we were driving to TP 300..

He was more my mate than my dad. wondered around giving all the kids heaps of encouragement . always had a cold drink ready.

I can still remember when he bought our first bike an AG200 Brand new neither of new how to start it let alone ride it. he reckon it can't be much different to a horse so on he hopped and off he went . we learn't our first lesson about poly pipe.

Growing up on a dairy farm I new the how fragile life can be .

We all carry on and joke here on the forum giving each other a hard time, but it is times like these when we need to step up and offer our support. I was chatting with Husky yesterday and I can tell you, he is one tough cookie. If I had just gone through what he was going through, I don't think I could have taken it. Speedy recovery to your 7 year old daughter who is still in intensive care in hospital and all our love and support to you, Viv, your mum's and the kids. Thumb Pump won't be the same without you guy's. We will be thinking of you.
Bullet and I will catch up with you for a beer next week when we come up to support your Kamfari.

quick update.

All had seat belts on however these are not effective when a vehicle rolls and everything in the vehicle including internal panels become moving projectiles. Everyone except grandma were thrown from the vehicle and grandma too would have been with another roll over.

Grandma - 4 broken ribs and developed phenomina - cuts to her face have healed well - she is home but her lungs are not yet clear
Delta - 2.5 yrs cuts, gashes and gravel rash has healed - the glue they used to hold the deep slices in her scape worked really well. Has recovered well from the concusion.
Alanah - 5yrs - fractured skull, brain brusing, concusion, cuts, brusies, gravel rash. We were very worried when she developed a fever and the texture of the swelling around the fracture in her skull changed. But with another course of iv antibotics she kicked the fever. She is nearly back to her self but misses Grandad a lot. She still has some deep cuts on her legs which are healing slowly.
Caley - 7 yrs - Was in an induced coma in ICU for 7 days, Pelvis broken in 2 places, femor near the top broken the ball which goes into the hip joint - has been screwed. Jaw broken in 2 places and 1 has been plated. Fractured skull, rib and shoulder blade. While in the induced coma we were unsure as to how serious the brain damage would be and a bolt was inserted to her skull to measure the brain swelling to determione if surgery would be required to stop further brain damage by the brain swelling causing pressure to cause further brusing and possible perminant damage. She was in hdu for several days and moved to 5B childrens ward before 2 others were discharged. She has brain brusing but no perminant damage. She is wearing a hip spiker caste which goes from her chest to her toes on the left and to her knee on the right leg. I was able to take her out of the ward - downstairs and outside yesterday for some fresh air for a short amount of time before her head began to ache again. She has been remarkably brave and can't wait to get home. She is very pleased that only part of her head was shaved and she still has most of her blonde locks. She had several lots of stitches and they have healed well. With time the ones on her head will disappear under her hair. It will take time before we are sure the growth plates in her femor and jaw have not been damaged. We hope she will be home from hospital before finke.
Jade - 12yrs, Jade was the only one not knocked unconscious and she was able to tell the 1st on the scene to keeping looking for all the passengers til all were found. She also comforted Delta as people helped those seriously injured. She was asleep with her DS in her hand before the accident. We have worked out that she was first out of the car and she recalls cartwheeling down the bitumen and glimpsing the 4x4 flipping in front of her each time she went over. She thought it was a nightmare but she couldn't wake up. And she lost her DS! She had surgery to remove bitumen and glass from the massive gravel rashes on her legs which are still healing. She had an ultrasound yesterday with determined another object in her wrist - glass or bitumen - we are unsure as yet. she is on crutches and has been allowed to used the school lifts! Hopefully the scars on the side of her face will fade with time. She has been deeply affected by the accident and the loss of her step grandad more than anyone would expect.
Grandad (G's dad) was killed on impact and this has deverstated us all. We were unable to attend his funeral at Mt Mee as all of the other 5 passengers were still in hospital. Although he was her inlaw - Grandma (my mum) continues to greave for him as they were happily talking just before the accident and had gotten to know each other well over the last 8 months since my dad died a week before last finke. I curse god for taking him but then i thank god for not taking them all.
In has been hard to lose one dear to our hearts and have 5 others spread over 3 floors of a hospital.
Many people have been focusing on the young man driving the other car and how he should be punished. Some have asked the police to check if the seat belts were worn, thus the police have checked via Grandma if they were. I don't know what they are trying to achieve as unfortunatly nothing will bring our Grandad back.

Northern Territory Police have charged an 18-year-old man over a crash that killed a 68-year-old man and seriously injured his seven-year-old granddaughter on Saturday.

The girl is in a critical condition at Royal Darwin Hospital, while the man's wife and three other granddaughters, aged 12, five and two, who were also hurt in Saturday night's crash, are in a stable condition.

Police say the family was travelling in a four-wheel-drive on the Stuart Highway when it rolled several times near Noonamah after colliding with a sedan that was turning off the highway onto a dirt road.

They say the sedan driver failed to stop.

A car believed to have been involved in the accident was located on a road south of Darwin a short time later. The driver was found nearby.

The 18-year-old has been charged with hit-and-run causing death and hit-and-run causing serious harm.

He is expected to appear in the Darwin Magistrate's Court on May 7.

The Territory's 2009 road toll now stands a 6, nine fewer than the same time last year
A Darwin magistrate has expressed his shock that an 18-year-old man accused of a hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a grandfather has not had his driver's licence suspended.

Adrian Brook sat with his parents in the front row of the Darwin Magistrate's Court this morning.

He is facing 11 charges, including hit-and-run and causing the death of a 68-year-old man.

Police allege the teenager's car crashed into the man's four-wheel-drive at Noonamah last month, causing it to roll.

His four granddaughters, aged 12, 7, 5 and 2, and their 73-year-old grandmother were injured.

The seven-year-old remains in Royal Darwin Hospital.

Magistrate Daynor Trigg said he hoped the teenager would have been disqualified from driving immediately - but he was shocked when told Mr Brook still had his driver's licence.

"He's charged with DUI, dangerous driving, causing death by dangerous driving, leaving the scene of an accident," he told the prosecutor.

"You haven't given him a suspension notice? ... Maybe the police want to rectify that."

The case has been adjourned until July.

AN 18-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested and charged in relation to a crash that killed a grandfather and put a 73-year-old woman and their four granddaughters in hospital.

Police, firies and ambulance received report a of the crash - which happened on a pitch-black, two-lane stretch of the Stuart Highway about 10km south of Noonamah - about 11pm on Saturday.

Territory Duty Superintendent Michael Murphy said the grandfather - driving a Mitsubishi Challenger - had been heading north with his grandchildren - aged 12, seven, five and two – and their grandmother from the other side of the family.

The young man in a Toyota Camry sedan was coming from the opposite direction when the accident occurred.

"(That) caused the Challenger to move sideways and then go into a roll - it rolled numerous times," Supt Murphy said.

The grandfather and the seven-year-old girl are believed to have been thrown from the vehicle, and man, 68, died at the scene.

The grandparents were looking after the girls while the parents were holidaying.

St John Ambulance deputy operations manager Craig Garraway said one of the girls was treated for hip injuries, another as a precautionary spinal patient, one lost some teeth and all had grazes and bruises.

Among the scattered debris across the road -including half a doll, playing cards, and a folding chair - was vital evidence of the other car involved in the crash. Part of its bumper and a number plate had been left behind.

The Stuart Highway's northbound lanes were closed until late yesterday afternoon, with traffic diverted down a side track.

All five passengers in the Challenger were Darwin locals and were conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital. The 7-year-old remains in a serious but stable condition today.

The 18-year-old Darwin man was charged with hit and run causing death, hit and run causing serious harm and was bailed to appear in the Darwin Magistrate’s Court on 7 May.

Investigations are continuing and a brief for the Northern Territory Coroner is also being completed.

Supt Murphy appealed for motorists to drive responsibly.

"Our road toll is six, compared with 15 at the same time last year, but that's six too many," he said.

Adrian Brook

A MAN who allegedly fled after a crash that killed a grandfather and put his four granddaughters and their grandmother in hospital has appeared in court.

Adrian Brook, 18, sat in court with his mother and stepfather while his case was briefly heard yesterday.

Brook has been charged with 12 offences including hit and run causing death, recklessly endangering serious harm and not stopping after a crash.

He allegedly was heading south on the Stuart Highway about 10km from Noonamah about 11pm on April 18.

The 68-year-old man driving the other car was driving north, and was believed to have been thrown from the car along with his seven-year-old granddaughter.

He died at the scene.

It is believed the girls were being looked after by their grandparents while their parents were on holidays.

All five passengers were local to Darwin.

Police arrested Brook the next day near the Coomalie Creek Caravan Park, and charged him another day later after he had been assessed at Royal Darwin Hospital.

The court set a date for a committal hearing in September. Brook's bail was continued.

A man has been killed after the vehicle he was driving rolled several times on the Stuart Highway near Noonamah last night.

Police received a report at around 11pm last night that a Mitsubishi Challenger with six occupants had rolled several times. Witnesses told police the vehicle was travelling inbound when it collided with a Toyota Camry sedan which was making a right hand turn into an unnamed dirt road.

The collision caused the Mitsubishi to roll several times killing the male driver, who is believed to be in his early 70s. Four girls aged 12, 7, 5 and 2 were injured along with a 73-year-old woman. They have been taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment.

Police said the driver of the Toyota Camry failed to stop and left the scene travelling outbound on the Stuart highway. A silver Toyota Camry believed to have been the vehicle involved in the crash was found abandoned this morning on the Coomalie road south of Darwin. A short time later Police arrested an 18-year-old man who is believed to be the driver of the vehicle. He was apprehended near the Batchelor Road turn-off.

Detectives and Northern Traffic Operations Members are investigating the crash and traffic is being diverted around the scene.

Superintendent Michael Murphy said police are urging motorists to drive with care as the Stuart Highway is expected to be closed between Livingstone Road and Townend Road for some time and traffic is being diverted around the scene.

“This is a terrible tragedy for all concerned and we are again calling on motorists to do the right thing to ensure their own safety and that of other road users,� Supt Murphy said.

“While the exact cause of this incident is still under investigation it will still serve as a tragic reminder that people should wear their seat belts, drive to the road conditions and ensure they don’t drink and drive.�

The death brings the Territory road toll to 6 compared to 15 for the same period last year.

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

well it has been 30 days since the accident. it feels more like years.

Caley (7yrs) is still in her cast in hospital. She has been very brave and the nurses are amazed at her positive attitude. She can now be lifted into a reclining wheelchair and attends the hospital school. At first it was very scaring pushing it as her legs poke out in different directions - she really needs a wide load sign as some doors are too narrow, but she looks forward to getting out of her bed! A trip to the corridor chalk board is a highlight of her day - it is amazing what most people take for granted and how special simple things become when unable to leave a bed unescorted.

Jade (12yrs) had a shard of glass removed from her hand under a local. The poor doc had trouble removing it as it had lodged itself in a bone.

My mum has more tests tomorrow.

Alanah (5yr) and Delta (2.5yrs) - most of their flesh wounds have healed. Where Deltas grazes on her elbow were bone deep - she has lost pigment in the skin but no scars! Alanahs deep cuts on her legs will scar but she will not have any other long term effects.

It is very tiring ensuring everyone gets to their appointments and managing to spend as much time with Caley but it feels worth it just for a smile.

I think it's amazing that people think quad bikes are dangerous but take traveling in a vehicle for granted as being safe. Though our quads we have made many friends. We are so lucky that things have not been worse. Thank you to everyone for the flowers, cards, good thoughts and prays.

wow i havnt been on the forum for some time so this is all new news to me .
The first quad people i met when i got to darwin were husky and his family ,,all of them came out to gunn point to ride with me and can i say that all the bad crap happens to all the wrong people .
Lovely family great people me and the wife take our son swimming a fair bit at the local pool and used to see the girls there with there grand parents and it made me sad that i live so far away from my parents so they cant spend more time with my son and now my daughter.
I am truely shoked and saddened by this life sometimes is not fair and things like this just bring home the fact that every moment with someone you care about is special husky, viv i truely feel for you both and wish i knew sooner to offer my hand for what ever you may have needed as you both have to me in the past regards ben

short story is the Judge doesn't understand the new Legisation. If you die instantly is less a wrong doing than "profanity removed" off while you roll around for a while, then die. Like what could he do? the judge asked......its all wrong. Looks like he will get off at this stage but prosucution will appeal. Too many "profanity removed" said he only had one beer. Now hes claiming that he tryied to committ susuide by crashing the car 20km down the road futher then used his mobile phone his mates to come get him. They wouldn't because the HWY was closed are they were drunk. So he hid in bushes for 24hrs.. There will be no answers, so the nightmare continuees. Thankyou to society who think its just Dandy to drink and drive. like a sport till you kill someone.
