tom tom are more acurate, in there ETA times etc.
they seem to know the road better then navman,
i have both and im happy with both.
i have a $300 navman and a $800 tom tom, so that may have something to do with it but they both get me to the same spot at the same time |

I had a Navman and it was stolen out of my car....fortunately! Not a good unit. Then I had a VDO which the wife made me sell because I was swearing at it all the time with the kid's in the car....not a good unit either. My current Tom Tom is very good. I have not even thrown it out of the window yet, so it must be ok. PM Noodles on this forum, he is the sat nav guru in my opinion. Good luck.

What Model's are your TomToms?
Looking at the pile of catalogues we get each week, it looks like all the different stores have different models, so you cant compare apples with apples.
I know someone will just say "Google it" but always good to know first hand what people think. _________________ www.waquadmx.com |

I've had a few and the best to date is my Garmin Nuvi 265W.
It's the only GPS I have found that works between the buildings when I have to go down to Sydney and the back up service is great. _________________ If it's not upside down, you're not trying hard enough!

| I have a simple Tom Tom One. Think its the cheapest thing they do.... works fine, and is much easier to set/ use than my fathers Nav Man, which was dearer and newer. |

i used navman before but the glide screens were crap very easy to kill now use tomtom ones and small screen make easier if using in smaller cars
we use these at work now for power pole navigation to find jobs easier they seem to be able to handle extra data being installed so cant be to bad and good prices to buy one aswell _________________ black covered in 5.7 powered oversize quad

Not sure if its still a current model, but i've had a Garmin Nuvi 260W for nearly 2yrs and its been good so far.
The only thing I dont like about it is that you can't view the map and the speedo on the same screen. Its one or the other.
Had one of the Original Tom Tom's before that and that was pretty good as well, but died without warning one day.
When buying, look into how many, if any, free map updates your get and how much any subsequent map updates are. _________________ www.quadsquad.com.au

I just checked mine and it is actually a Garmin Nuvi as well (I get hit in the head a lot).
There are a heap of models in the Nuvi range, but I beleive the maps are all the same, so go with the dearest one you can justify. That's what I did and I ended up about mid way through the range.

| not so keen on the garmin way of not being able to see the speed when using the route mode. Have a navman is alright other than when you use the onscreen keyboard somehow u can type a letter thats nowhere near where you have pressed! Next unit will prolly try a tomtom |

The speed is still displayed on the Nuvi while in route mode. _________________ If it's not upside down, you're not trying hard enough!

I think it's a standard setting.
I have the map in 3D mode and the speed is always displayed on the bottom left hand side of the screen.
When in route mode the arrival time is displayed on the bottom right hand side. _________________ If it's not upside down, you're not trying hard enough!

I got a tomtom 900
It does everything. It can hack into NASA computers and reposition satellites, it can calculate the rise and fall in the stock market for the next 4 days, and it even tells you how many stars in the sky
but..
ask it to find a street in a suburb you're not sure of...
forget it
example. say you want to go to a street where someone says its in mount druitt. but you don't know that really, the suburb name is hebersham. if you don't know that its really hebersham, you won't find the street your looking for in the tom tom. you have to know the correct suburb name before you go looking for it.
i had a garmin before, and it did what the tomtom didn't do.
looking back, i prefer none of them! i'd rather buy myself a BMW M5 and have the inbuilt sat nav. they operate and function so much better.... and besides, i can't stand the stupid thing always falling off the windscreen. _________________ "Back up Bug!" |

We've got a inbuilt GPS in our Subaru.
Clarion/Kenwood really make it and it uses their own software via a CD/ROM in the glove box. It's pretty easy to use but not stupid proof.
And what they've replaced it with, is a DVD player/viewer as well as enough WOW factors to justify getting the intercooled turbo 6 speed license revoker that's built around it. It is a very clever combination of technologies and space.
The two problems I see with all this stuff is user friendliness and technology leapfrogging itself.
What was state of art last Xmas, is 1/2 price now, and it can take a while to get your head around the features, most of which are limited in real use. ( except maybe speed alert and school zones )
For my 2 cents worth;
if you can learn to drive it,
if you can understand the instructions it's giving you,
if it will stay on the windscreen/dash,
if you can update the mapping,
if you can hide it when your not using it,
Get anyone that fits the bill. _________________ Remember. We elect politicians, but we have to deal with bureaucracy.
