Supprised you guys haven't picked up on the tyres on the 4th bike down, they are Pirelli P-Zero rally car tyres.
This guy is one of the Cz riders so he's probably running a similar setup to Macheck.
250km for refuel but the organisers do push it to the limit and you are supposed to have enough fuel to do 250km in the sand.
Reports out of South America are that most of the riders are having fuel issues; alot have run out with locals topping them up on stage. The sand, heat and altitude as well as the inconsistant quality of local fuel has caused many headaches.

Hey guys and girls, below is a e mail link to the ASO media department.
asotv@aso.fr
Send em an e mail asking them to televise the quad category just like the cars, bikes and trucks. I think it is about time they did this for our beloved sport. _________________ When I'm racing I'm living..... everything else is just waiting. |

Oh Yeah......thats telling it as it is.
Also from my man on the ground...........
Aussie motorbike rider Christopher Barriere-Varju's day started bad and got worse.
"This morning started with a problem with my GPS, so they fiddled with it but it's not working again. So I went through all the dunes with no GPS, nothing," he explained.
"But before that, I had the biggest crash in a long, long time, a massive stack."
On a day that saw Italian rider Luca Manca airlifted to hospital with a life threatening head injury and several other riders suffer nasty incidents, Barriere-Varju said he was happy to have made it home, but was still an incredulous at his own accident.
"I fell in a hole," he said simply.
"The only fricking hole in the middle of the bloody desert!
"It was flat, flat, flat. Everywhere, then there was little rolling hills. I did 100 of them just like this, and then for no reason, not a wash, no erosion, no nothing there was a big, massive hole, 2.5m wide and a metre and a half deep.
"I jumped the hill and then on the other side… woah! Straight into the hole and the bike stopped dead. I bounced off and tumbled away. I took all the impact on my legs and my backside, and I hurt my back a little bit."
Barriere-Varju is looking to finish the Dakar in his fourth attempt, having failed to finish last year. Added to the pressure, there is a film in production based on his 2010 effort.
"While I was lying on the ground I thought 'Oh, Simon [Lee] is going to be upset!'" the French-born Australian chuckled.
"I stayed on my knees for about 20 seconds, just feeling everything, moving very slowly and making sure there was no sharp pain before I set off again, but I had to ride standing up for most of the time because it was painful to sit down!"
Carrying the painful injury and with no GPS, Barriere-Varju found himself isolated and lost in the desert and low on fuel.
"Twenty kilometres from the end, with no GPS, I was following a track, but it was the wrong track because I ended up 50 kilometres away from the finish in big, big sand dunes. I did 50 kilometres up and down dunes for nothing!"
"When I saw the ocean I was so relieved because I had no fuel left," he explained.
No funny bone for WA rider Pollard.
Rob Pollard had a less eventful day today, staying on his bike for the entire stage and taking it easy to roll home in 46th place.
Despite his soft approach, Pollard was close to empty when his KTM made it to the Bivouac. He did make it home though, and explained that the injury suffered yesterday is a hairline fracture to his elbow.
"Surprisingly it's ok in a riding position," Pollard shrugged.
"The only issue is I can't take my helmet off and put it back on during the day because I can't get my elbow up there.
"I just took it easy today and I got passed by a few people but I'm not worried because I made it to the finish."
Tomorrow's stage is another sandy day in the dunes populated with fast flowing tracks that Pollard says he'll enjoy.
"I like the sand dunes. It's the rocks that really bugger me!" |

Wow, that was interesting. As I was listening to that it kind of reminded me of this years safari. Not the fatigue part but the part about helping out your mate if you are out. Before I started this years safari I talked with Paul and we agreed that we will try and race as independant as possible but lean on each other if we need to. You know, tools, parts, service help etc. Once I had run out of engines to race with I felt obliged to help keep Pauls machine going and to help Pete with service and repairs. In fact, I would have helped anyone on the event if I seen they were struggling. Thats how it is out there. Sure we are racing each other but more than that, we are there to beat the terrain and the event. We are there to help each other finish.
Not everyone has this attitude but most do. This was seen at Dakar this year when Castou (I think that is correct) stopped to help Coma when he was having overheating issues. Castou is a top contender but still stopped to help.
These gestures are in the true spirit of the event. Most stop to help and this happened to me lots of times during the Safari.
Long live the spirit of these events.
As far as my DNF and feeling sorry for myself..... well, let's just say I was disapointed for about 10 seconds and then made the most of my situation. I get over disapointments really fast and move on. Just the way I am. No dummy spits, no crying, just greatfull to have the chance to be out there. _________________ When I'm racing I'm living..... everything else is just waiting. |

I know what you mean......riding or wrenching, it's the adventure of a lifetime.
I'm absolutely sure that without all of the help I got overnight and on track I would have had a completely different experience.
Just got to find the time a money to do it again. |

Annie Seel nearly bins it
“At km 131 the track split around some ruins, and joined again after. To avoid dust I cut from right track over to the left, across a small rise. Behind the rise a 5m deep tomb opened, 2×3 wide. I rode too slow to jump and too fast to stop. Put the breakes on, slided bike to the left and abandoned ship. Instinctively I managed to jump to the left edge while bike tumbled down with the engine still running. I am lucky not to go down there cause the walls were impossible to climb.”
After getting back on her feet, a little shaken, Annie realized the bad situation. She stopped some riders to call for help.
“A helicopter came and I climbed down with a thin rope to check the bike, it was okay. We tried to pull the bike, but no way. They said I must wait for the organisation truck to come and help. It took a while but then Mr Etienne Lavigne, race director, arrived in a helicopter instead! Like a true hero he climbed down with a rope, tied my bike with the real tie roses, and instructed the pilot how to lift it. Now I could continue the race, saved by the angel from above. Getting help from Etienne himself made me feel much better in that awful situation. Only suffering from painful swollen hand and aching foot.”
Why and how did this happen? There was no mark of this hole in the roadbook! That’s Dakar…
Tonight the bike needs some makeover, it was rather scratched and battered.

Lol. All we did was set you on fire this time and a little candle wax. Just imagine what we would have done to you if we had finished and won! _________________ When I'm racing I'm living..... everything else is just waiting.

WOW!!!!! Now THAT is scary! WTF?!?! I would say the guys who marked the road book drove straight past this hole and had no idea it was there. There is no way anyone would know it was there and not put up some kind of caution. Man, alot to be said for "STICK TO THE TRACKS!"
So glad to hear Annie is OK. Man, she could have been seriously f%#ked up right there! _________________ When I'm racing I'm living..... everything else is just waiting. |

Yes it a progressive dampening system for the front A-Arms similar to the rear linkage.
I remember Pete sending me pic's of this about 3 years ago but it the first time I have seen it in use _________________ Smitty |
