How come nobody told me about Cam? I could have organized a sponsor to bring him up. How old is he and what's his ride?

On behalf on the Territory Quad Association we'd like to thank the interstate riders that made the long trip up to Darwin (Ryan Lancaster, Chris Brenton, Mitchell Van Vliet and juniors, Chris Bosnakis and Oliver Aston) - we know that it was well worth it for them. To be able to race against Joe is practically a once in a lifetime opportunity. Joe was nothing short of awesome to watch - he is soooo smooth and fast. The pro race consisted of three moto's, ten laps each - just over 15 minutes duration. Joe was at least a third of the track in front of Ryan and Chris, who vied for second position, with Mitchell Van Vliet in fourth. Blake Waldmann was giving Mitchell a run, but had to retire with engine problems after race 2. It was an awesome day, everything went without a hitch - would have been nice to have had a few more spectators. The school that Joe conducted was a huge success, no matter what level you are Joe has a lot to give. Our more experienced seniors improved their lap times by around 7 seconds, juniors improved by up to 20 seconds! Joe has really enjoyed his visit to Oz, we'll see what we can come up with for next year.

hey husky you forgot one other young gun from vic

Cam Wade is no slouch on a quad and at the moment is firing big guns but same issue he wont be at the nats

and we are not going to nats now either costs are just a bit to great for my pocket

Ando is only vic clubman i know of so far that is going

maybe if on mainland will make it next year

Just to put a bee into the Honey pot so to speak - one other teenager that has stepped up to the Pro Line is Luke Gaisford (turned 17 a week ago), he races with Yewers, Brenton, Lancaster, Higson and McKay in WA and has proven he mixes it well with them, he can lay claim to beating some of the best from WA.

Congratulations to Darwin Club for putting a great show, I know the WA crew had a ball and it has left a lasting impression on all of them. Thanks to Stoney and his family for giving up beds and space to house a few and your hospitality is greatly appreciated. Cheers to all that helped to get it organised behind the scenes.

Next big meet "The Nationals" - we note the abscence of some big names not attending and hope that maybe circumstances may change to enable them to attend.

Cheers

Maybe next year we might be able to get development squad of young guys from around Australia all under the age of 20. I'm sure I can make it happen 1 or 2 from each state.

in 2003 all those boys and Luke raced in the 90cc class at the Nats and have come through to seniors.... absolutely brilliant to see them all doing well, with such a long history racing each other...
In fact to have the 2005 Josh Higson 2006 Luke Gaisford 2007 Mitch VanVliet( all National 200cc-300cc title holders) all racing in the pro class should be applauded. Would love to see the Wades over there too, and sure young Adam Larsen(who was also on the 2003 90cc grid) will be right up there too next year.

Should be excellent over in Tassie, new track and all that no one has been on(cept the Tassie riders}

Correction - Larson nearly 15
anyway !!!!

I must agree with Mrs Gaiter - these young Pro riders have challenged each other through the ranks since they were young. All brilliant riders and wouldnt it be lovely to see some Race team get behind these young future champions and help them out to get even bigger and better. I think they all deserve it.
Still waiting for Mitch to get home - been talking to him on the phone and he has had the experience of a life time. Rob said you cant wipe the smile off his face. Mitch said everyone was amazing and so helpful and he learnt heaps!!!! Cant thank Husky Goat and the NT enough for giving Mitch an opportunity of a life time. One Im sure he will remember for ever. THANK YOU

Just wanting to relay to everyone who attended Fly With The Byrd - Joe said he had a really great time in Darwin, he enjoyed the racing and is keen for us to organise something again for him next year. Really good to hear Mitch can't wipe the smile off his face - I reckon everyone feels the same. Joe is an amazing guy, so talented but so down to earth. For everyone that did the school - hope the sore muscles from the hundreds of push-ups are starting to recover!

Just a bit of a write up - Bigdog

“Come Fly with Byrd”

Thursday afternoon we arrived in Darwin and were greeted by Stoney and the Darwin heat. Rocked up to Stoney’s joint and shown our air conditioned rooms, we didn’t want to come out, but we did and made our way to the Top End Motorcycle Club where the man himself , Joe Byrd, was conducting a school for about 14 riders wanting to improve there skills.

We took pleasure in watching these riders enjoy their two days of fun and torture. Push ups were the order of the two days and Joe handed out heaps of them. While the riders had their own bikes, Joe had borrowed Stoney’s Honda 700. Big table tops, no problems. This man can ride. It’s no wonder he is one of the States top riders, and he’s here in Australia to race. For those who didn’t come, you missed out big time!
We got to talk and hang out with Joe at the track and that evening at a barbecue. Talked about racing and what ever else came up. He was great! Not a big shot like some would think, just very approachable.

Saturday was Race Day. No getting up with the sparrows here. 7.00am rise, in the car and head for the track. Riders meeting happened about 9.00am then came practice. Surprisingly, only two laps of practice for all classes which meant one lap under yellow and one lap caning it. The Pro Quads were given a second practice of two quick laps. On the 1st lap of practice Ryan Lancaster broke a swing arm. Craig, Bundy and I started to remove the swing arm and fit it to the spare bike which didn’t make it through the 2nd practice. With that done, we also changed the axle over. It’s bad enough working on the bike, but in Darwin, it’s a whole lot worse. Luckily all three of us are in shape and fit. Lesser beings wouldn’t have faired so well.

There were all classes in both quads and two wheelers on the day with all classes running three rounds, but I was here for the Pro Quads and to watch Joe Byrd.

Race 1: With all entrant drawing pegs for the 1st round to get gate selection, Byrd was about the 4th rider to pull a peg, and you wouldn’t believe it when he pulls out No.7. The 30 sec board was held up and we pulled our umbrella down leaving the riders in the direct heat of the Darwin sun. Many nervous riders on the line, ready to have a race with a real Pro rider. What was going through their minds? What ever it may have been soon disappeared as the 5 sec board was turned. The gates dropped and they were off with Byrd leading the way through the first corner. Ryan Lancaster faired the best after Joe. It didn’t take long for Byrd to start checking out with an impressive display of riding. No one expected anything else from this man, it’s his job. Chris Brenton didn’t take too long to catch Lancaster, but things weren’t going right for these two. Lancaster picked up a rear flat on lap three and Brenton’s bike was running and sounding like a dog. Mitchell Van Vliet from Vic was enjoying his own tussle with local rider Blake Waldman. After 10 laps Byrd finished just short of 30 sec in front of Lancaster and Brenton who were about 30 secs in front of Van Vliet then Waldman.

Race 2: I’m sure the riders thought it would be different this time. Brenton had his ride running well and Lancaster had new tyres on, yet out of the 1st corner it was Byrd again. Lancaster 2nd and after pulling a bit of a wheelie from the start, Brenton 3rd. Byrd checked out again as expected and Brenton was on Lancaster’s tail. Lap three saw Lancaster do the step on step off and gain time, Brenton’s attempt saw him come off. He looked a treat chasing his bike, but it didn’t want to start. By the time he had a push he was a lap down. He chased down Van Vliet over the next three laps and passed him at the end of the back straight only to see Van Vliet cut back and pass Brenton. I’m sure Van Vliet won’t forget that pass for a long time. By the next jump Brenton was passed, but it still left him a lap down which meant Van Vliet was 3rd behind Byrd and Lancaster. Waldman and Matt Stone were 4th and 5th. Brenton finished a lap down in 6th.

Race 3: You guessed it, Byrd out of the 1st corner with Lancaster right there with him to the second corner. Brenton was not liking the concrete starts but he was still there and took advantage when Lancaster over cooked the corner before the back straight as did Van Vliet and Stone. Lancaster made the ground to get back to 3rd but was unable to make ground on Brenton who had finally conquered the step on step off. Positions stayed that way with Byrd 1st, 25 secs ahead of Brenton and Lancaster 15secs behind. Van Vliet and Stone a lap down in 4th and 5th.

This event wasn’t about winning; it was the opportunity to pit yourself against one of the best in the world. Those who came had the best days racing ever. Joe Byrd, what can I say, he was awesome and a great bloke. He had hats and shirt for sale. Signed anything you brought up to him and when I asked him how much to buy one of his race jerseys signed for our Matt Batista Charity Event, he said, heck, I’ll give you one. At tea that night he gave me a race jersey, hat, Tee shirt and several posters all signed. Just hope he comes back next year and I would encourage everyone to get there.

I reckon Cam and Jono would have almost given their right arms to be there at Darwin ( might be a bit tuff riding then!!!!) . Just as well someone didnt mention a sponsored trip to Darwin, wouldnt have been able to stop Cam or Jono then!!! Jono and I met Byrd in the US earlier this year, I'm sure Cam would have loved to meet him on the track, as someone said, "once in a life time oportunity" Cam's up to his eyeballs with exams this year so thats partly why we wont be at the Nats. after Perth 2006,taking out Clubman class and runner up in production with only a few senior races under his belt, then last year Expert and Production title at Maffra, you can imagine Cam being a bit peeved not being able to get to Tassy to have a go in Pro class. Never mind, hopefully next year they'll schedule it a little later and we'll make it then.
