As most of you know im replacing the gaskets in my top end and while im at it i'll be doing a few mods to the engine. Not as many as i first anticipated as Dad talked to an experianced trike engine builder and from what im told the horsepower gain is not worth the reliability loss. Im still keen to pull the engine completely out though if mainly only to polish it. How should i go about it from start to finish? Should i start on it before i remove the cylinder? Should i use paint stripper or a wire wheel? I dont want to split the cases but i want to turn this...

Into...

I noticed in Oldrodders 83R build thread he got a pretty good look when the paint was removed,

Step by step if possible.
Thanx.

its a big job, those fins in particular are really time consuming. you might want to just start with the covers and see how that goes.
at minimum you'll need a palm or detail sander, powerful bench grinder or angle grinder, cutting buff, polishing buff, compound sticks, brake cleaner.

basically you have to get all the scratches and pitting out before attempting to polish. this usually means taking the surface back to 120grit then moving up to 180, 220, 300 and lastly 400 grit. then you cut and slightly polish with sisal buff and emory compound, clean off the residue with brake cleaner then polish with loose leaf buff and white rouge compound. if all your sanding steps were completed correctly and your grinder was powerful enough to let the compound work its magic then you should have a decent shine.

to linish the places your sander cant get too you'll need a dremel or could get away with an electric drill. attatch a small sanding wheel with shaft and away you go.

my advice would be: paint stripper.. get rid of the red. paint the cases, barrel/head in black and just polish the covers.
you could spend 30+ hours trying to polish the whole engine but with out the right equipment it wont be worth the effort. paint or a satin sandblasted finish looks better then a sh.tty polishing job plus it takes alot less effort. goodluck

Who is this experienced trike engine builder who said they are not reliable? Not much of a builder if he has reliability problems. You can get big HP out of air coolers if you know what you are doing and to say they are not reliable is straight out BS.

BS---------- Barry Smith ?

Ben, i would get the top off and bead blast it ( Glen may be able to help u with that ), that looks really neat and clean when done and with the bottom end paint strip for starters the move to a wire wheel to clean it up.

Bead blast or have sandblasted what you can, it was a lot of work to get all the old crap off to paint it properly and as stitch said it would require many hours and lots of different processes to polish the complete engine.
Painted cases and polished covers would look great.

Have we been in contact by PM about port work? If so, there was no need to reply. How many air coolers has this trike engine builder performed mods on or is he just a reconditioner which any dumb Harry can do.
