26-10-2010 - The Aussies are coming!
This year the “Personal Dakar Argentina Chile” has attracted a record number of Australian competitors. On two wheels or four, they might even improve the quality of the performance through sheer strength of numbers. Their best men have set their sights on the Top 10.
The movement is on the march. In the next edition of the Dakar a record will already have been broken with the issue of technical and administrative scrutineering, since eight vehicles driven by Australians are expected at the start of Buenos Aires. It is in the motorcycle category that we can observe a real upsurge from the other end of the world, with six machines already committed and four new participants in the rally. Apart from anything else these four wild rovers make up the first 100% Australian team in the Dakar, GHR Honda, in which they aim to make their presence felt on the track. Armed with the experience gained in the Australasian Safari Rally, the benchmark event in their part of the planet, the “Aussies” are pinning their hopes on the youngest among them to join battle with the best in the discipline. Their spearhead, little wizard Jacob Smith, will be only 22 years old when he come to the start of the Dakar, but his victory in the 2009 Safari gives him all the confidence of a champion in the making: “My goal is to finish in the Top 10. And this year I’m here just to learn the ropes. Then I’ll be trying to score a better result!”. Sure of his grounds, go-getter Jacob still concedes certain limits as regards global positioning navigation: “now you mention it, I’ve never used GPS up to now!”
In that respect much is expected of both cars. However, Bruce Garland and navigator Hiroaki Suzuki sport some impressive feathers in their caps, with an overall 11th place in the first South American edition of the Dakar, in 2009. Since which time the words of the driver, incidentally now five-time winner of the Safari, ring out loud and clear as a warning to all the outsiders in the rally: “our goal is to finish in the Top 10 and to be the first in line for the million dollars”.

23-12-2010 - Marcos Patronelli: "60 - 70 % chances of being at the start"
The defending quad champion, seriously injured in late November, hasn’t withdrawn from the 2011 Personal Dakar Argentina-Chile. Now ten days prior to the start, he is in a race against the clock in which he hopes to win.
"I still cannot put my foot on the ground, but I work out everyday in a rehab center”. Marcos Patronelli, who broke both fibulas during testing, has obviously not given up. His mental fortitude of a champion allowed him to become the first South American to win Dakar in 2010. He is counting on this same determination to get him to the start line of the 2011 edition. "I am extremely motivated. I have ten days left, which could be enough time. I give myself a 60-70% chance of being at the start". After a very quick convalescence, the latest idol in the Argentina press has had to lower his objectives. "I won’t be able to compete for the win, but I will try to take it easy alongside my brother Alejandro", concluded Marcos. _________________ When I'm racing I'm living..... everything else is just waiting.

32 quads is awesome and thanks for providing the list of competitors. Some interesting things on the list.......no KTM's. Almost all Raptors and Can-Ams with a few Outlaws. There are 2 Honda 700XX's and 1 Polaris Sportsman 800 (I think).
Camila Lipriotti the Italian female World Quad Champ has swapped to a Raptor as she thinks the KTM is slower, less reliable and more expensive.
Although the reigning champ MARCOS PATRONELLI seems down and out his brother ALEJANDRO is still in and a good chance of a win. I would not count out 09' Safari and past Dakar champ JOSEF MACHACEK; he had a bad run and was out early in the last years Dakar, he seems to be on his Yamaha based contraption again.
Some pics from last year to get you in the mood.......

I like the tractor with the side pipes. I think that's JOSEF MACHACEK and its one of those Yamaha 850 twin powered quads in a Raptor frame.
Not long to go now but issues already include customs in Buenos Aries going on strike and the whole Kamaz truck team (and others) stuck in Europe because of the snow. I've always said it's such a huge undertaking that if you make it to the start line in the Dakar you have won already.

I heard that Rafal Sonik crashed and is out. Marcos Patronelli is well down the order and obviously hasn't fully recovered from his injuries.

Overall
1st 251 MACHACEK Josef (CZE)
2nd 252 PATRONELLI Alejandro (ARG)
Alejandro Patronelli “I just wanted to ride the stage. I was not aiming for victory at all today. It was a clean stage, quite nice and not dangerous. There were a lot of bikes and plenty of dust. I was able to overtake a few bikers, but after that it got more difficult. It’s good to have won, but being 2nd in the general standings doesn’t mean much. For instance, if I get a puncture tomorrow, I could end up way back in the field. So, I’m going to continue racing my way, taking it day by day and trying to do the best I can”.
