My best mate is considering getting his 10yr old daughter a computer with internet access for her 11th birthday and installing it in her bedroom. He asked my opinion as he doesnt know a lot about computers and safety in relation to predators etc. Neither do i so i told him to install it in the loungeroom but his daughter has her heart set on having it in her bedroom. What do you guys think?

No way unless its fully restricted with parent locks
I logged on very late one night whilst on night duty and discovered my much younger cousin was online on face book. I sent her a msg to go to bed and she quickly turned it off. I guess her mum and dad didnt know she was online as it is in her bedroom. Also against I-Phones for young kids as it poses the same issues!

Agree, with or without parent lock. There are ways around most of those systems.

Not unsupervised.

Yeah, thats what i was thinking. With web cam and what not God knows what they could be exposed to or asked to do. Yuck Also facebook, myspace and social network sites do seem to be an easy way for some unsavioury people to contact children.

Thanks for your input guys, youve just confirmed my thoughts. I'll show my buddy this thread. Cool

My kids do not have a computer in there rooms.I make them sit at the kitchen table on the lap top so I can keep an eye on them.

when I go to bed I turn the net off so no one can use it.

With that webcamming and stuff they seem to think its cool and fun and then they put pictures of it up on facebook, to them it might just be fun but to everyone else that can see them it makes them look like idiots, and worse.

I think it is more of an issue with girls than boys too, with boys not as likely to put things on their that might effect their "image" but also because people aren't out to get boys as much.
