I got pulled over in California for going through a stop sign. The policeman wanted to know where I was from with the funny accent and all and when I said Australia, he said he hadn't heard of THAT state. After talking to him for about five minutes, he finally got back to the stop sign thing and asked me if signs where I come from are written in American. I told him no and he let me off!

I worked at a Summer Camp a few years ago and the teenagers there thought cannabalism existed in Australia and that we had a massive fence here somewhere to keep the crocodiles out!!! I kid u not!!

I lived in the states for a while back in 1990's. I was getting a hair cut and the lady cutting my hair asked me where I was from cause I had a funny accent. When I told her that I was born in Australia and had been the in states for 6 weeks she said I had learnt the language quick. She was 100% percent serious. This was in a suburb of Chicargo not some back water town either. I spent a year in school there and with what they are taught, it doesn't surprise me they have the knowledge of other countries that they do.
