I thought this would be a pretty cool subject that you guy's down there mite be interested in,and thought I'd give you's a little info on one of my favorite racing,Iceracing !! Up here in good ole' Michigan ,USA we get all the nasty weather.I know that ice down there is probably limited if any ,but here's some thing's I do to get ready to hit the ice.
I've been running the ice for a few year's now and learning more tip's and trick's as time roll's on.I started out with a '85 R a few year's back.It was a good runner, but my lack of experience made for some less than impressive racing.I did good but what I learned made thing's way easier for the future.
The next year which was in '07 ,I ran a 350X,but I still could'nt get the thumper to perform like I wished it would. But I was still on a learning curve. This year with a few year's of experience in what Not to do ,I went for the ultimate set-up.I ran my Custom built '87 ATC 600X for this year's event and took the checked flag home in the 451 -up open class.
In past year's I ran boxed screw, but this year I set myself up with Carbide Cold-Cutter's.They are actually screw's 3/8's long and the head of the screw has a carbide edge ,which actually cut's into the ice.A 120.00 us dollar's later, and I was good to go.I used 18 inch Turf Tamer's with 2 coldcutter's per knob and 3 per knob on my stock 23.5x11 front tire. The 600X was all about getting there and getting there fast.On the rear suspension,I dropped it to where I was almost bottomed out,and I raised the front as far as I could ,Thus giving me a perfect center of gravity .The Peg's were modded a bit giving me a few more degree's up for leaning hard into the corner's.
The rear axle was stretched out 5 inch's with adapter's and with using a stock 350X axle I was able to get an extra 2 inch's of stretch by switching the sleeve's around ,PLus I went with Douglas Blue Label off-set wheel's,in which when all was said and done I had 52 iches of width from outside to outside on the rear's.That was huge !
Pic's will be put on here but due to my lack of knowledge ,someone is gonna post 'em up for me.
Feel free to let me know if ya 'all got any question's or what not,I thought you's mite find this to be an interesting subject with our beloved trike's. _________________ Showing the restof the world why Michigan is on the map!!!!! |

Is that a 350X motor bored and stroked to 600 or a 600 motor in a 350X frame.
With all those screws in the tyres I would hate to accidentally drop my foot of the footpeg, that would give one hell of a road rash. |

Think its also uses the 350x rear sub-frame grafted to the XR600 frame to allow the plastics to fit,its a very slick conversion,Roger and i saw the bottom of quite a few beers when we were in Indiana in '06 hey Roger ! _________________ 1989 TRX 250R |

Yeah Tony we had a good time down there,a time that will never be forgotten for sure. The 600x is for sure a monster, especially on the ice..That machine pulled like nothing i've ever ridden threw the corner's.And the build is up on org. if ya wanna check it out.I would imagine with those coldcutter's,if your leg got under the tire's,there would deffinatly be some issue, and not good one's.
If ya look at the rear tire pic's,take notice the inside "left" tire has slightly less air in it than the outside. That was another thing I learned,it help's on getting to the inside better on the corner's.Thanks for posting the pic's Aussie..Do ya like the 600X aussie shroud's,they are awesome !!? _________________ Showing the restof the world why Michigan is on the map!!!!! |
